B&C Alternator field clip

On the back of my B&C Alternator is the clip that holds the 2 field wires in place. In my installation I'm up tight against the firewall 1/4" clearance and there is no room for the clip. I am making some spacers to move the engine forward 1/4 to 3/8" to allow more room but I would like to have a solution for the stock clip. I built a 90 degree setup that will fit but it's far from optimal. I also thought I could remove the alternator and solder 2 wires directly to the back of the alt, and route to a connector to the regulator.

There is no ability to cut an access hole in the firewall as the upper cross brace is directly behind the connector.

Are there any locking spade terminals that I could use, or perhaps someone knows of a shorter clip? Photos attached...IMG_20161221_091039.jpg IMG_20161221_091846.jpg IMG_20161221_101915.jpg IMG_20161221_133949.jpg

Thanks for the help,
Nelson

There is a style of spade terminals called 'flag terminals'. It's just a spade terminal made with a 90 degree crimp section. You should be able to find some at Napa or Carquest, etc. It will be a trial and error to see if they will fit the back of the SD20.

Let us know how it works out.

It's do able. But you're looking at milling off the block, turning off the same amount from the shaft, and finding an elegant way of taking some off the alternator shaft. Seems like a major PIA. I'm curious what engine mount is being used? I don't normally have that tight of clearance issues with a standard mount.

Mount is the Javron, 2" lowered mount, by Jay... Have 1/4" and 3/8" spacers being made up today. Pictures to follow.

Installed the 1/4" spacers and ended up with 7/16" between back of alternator and firewall. I used a couple bare flag terminals and soldered the wires, then covered with heat shrink. New bolts on order...

Looks familiar. B&C should make a 90* plug for close clearance installations of the 410-H like we see in Cubs. The 425-H is shorter but it has other interference problems that DQ it.

Nelson- did you have to swing the engine to install the alternator? I had just enough clearance to tip it into the accessory case and onto the mounting studs but the mag has to be out to do it. As for recessing the firewall, you could change the plug-tube relationship by rotating the alternator.

Stewart,

It's a new build, finishing up the wiring hopefully this week. The alternator is pretty tight but loosening the mounts and letting the engine sag in front I believe I can get the alternator off. Like yours the mag has to be removed... I talked to Jay, he is looking to modify his mount to give more clearance. I have a mount from a year ago.

Seems it would be easier to swing the mount than pulling a mag and re timing it. And if you go all electric there isn't even a tach cable to disconnect.
