Looking at a 53 PA-18 108 for sale, it has toe brakes. Was it an option?
Looks like a decent job if it was a conversion, but I havent seen many early cubs without heel brakes. Thanks

Piper made some models for the Air Force. No flaps, toe brake's, seats to allow wearing parachute's, etc.

I personally do not care for them!
Heal Brakes are the only way to go for me!!!!!!!!

The toe brakes are OK on the 105 Specials, the problem is if you fly it from the back seat (i.e. to check somebody out) and your feet are larger than a size 5, you are going to hit the brakes all the time and not the rudder. The front ones are OK, still prefer heel brakes.

If there is a "T" at the end of the N number, it had toe brakes.

The front ones are OK if properly adjusted. It is possible to adjust them so you hit the firewall prior to applying brakes. Surprise! When you need them the most, you don't have them!

I would convert it back to heel brakes first thing!
