serial number location

started a rehab of the entry door on my PA12. In the process of stripping the frame I noticed that the serial number was stamped on the door mounting bracket. Does anyone know if this was common practice by Piper? Never heard of this and did not expect to see a serial number in this location.....

They probably put the SN on the door too since the cruiser(s) door was hand built to fit the airframe. The fuselage SN is above the headliner welded to the tube that goes across the bottom of the windshield.
