High Oil Temperature Experience

The air blast on the temperature bulb really only sends a BS signal to the gauge. It does very little to actually cooling the oil.

Thats kinda what I thought so I took it off and closed off the hole in the rear baffle thinking it would let more air pass through the clyinder fins. But on another thread I've been lead to believe that it's needed so I will try putting it back on.

Anyone ever seen an oil cooler installed IAW Piper Service Letter 178? says an additional cooler is installed externally on the left side of the fuselage cowl behind the present radiator. This was printed in 1951 so it was a different oil cooler installation then. There is also some good information on oil temperature tests in the Service Letter. "We would like to point out that the maximum oil temperature on this engine as approved after a 150 hour test at this temperature, is 245 degree F., and that this temperature may frequently be reached when outside air temperatures are 100 degrees or over. Indicated temperatures of approximately 245 degrees on very hot days should not cause concern."

Radiant heat from the #2 cylinder would probably adversely affect efficiency. A thin sheet of welding insulation between the two would probably be useful.
(fiberglass cloth stuffed with some kind of white fibers....not asbestos anymore....)

I remember wrapping the front cross over pipe with insulation to see if it improved my oil temp. I recall that it did, but I can't find the data in my notes....

I've seen banner tow cubs with aux oil coolers mounted back on the landing gear cabane....in WW2, they found out that the farther away from the prop that they mounted the heat exchangers, the more efficient they were. Something about the pulsation of the prop blast being detrimental....
