Im going to get either 26 or 29 inch ABWs for my 18. I havent decided yet. Im not interested in 31s. Has anyone got images of their machine with 26 or 29 inch wheels.. ABW site does not say what is what in their image gallery. Also, if anyone is interested in upgrading to bigger wheels, let me know if you want to sell your 26/29".

Cheers

I'd buy the ones with the wheels for sale here for $3000. That's a good price and they are 31's.

Or get the 29's and you can have the boys at AK bushwheel's add the extra layer of rubber for longer wear.

You won't be happy with 26" everyone always wishes they bought the bigger tires.

Buy the 29s. Call and talk to Wup he will explain the difference in parasitic drag. These are 29s, and I reeeely like them.

Mike,
any chance you could take a couple measurments for me..?
Like from the ground up to the center of spinner.
ground up to center of axle.
ground up to wing tip... don't know what to use for a reference point.

I'd like to put 29's on my j3, trouble is it has to share hangar space with the c180, and they over lap wings to fit in hangar, so too
tall would be a problem.

Thanks, Kem

Get 35's for the C180:)

Get 35's for the C180:)

Just happened to have in the hangar this past weekend, a c180 with ..(?) 29's (?) on a 10 in. wheel, tailed back in the corner,
and a supercub with 35's in front where the j3 would go.... looked way cool. And they fit!!

Binty-

Here's my 18 on 29's and my old PA-12 on 26's, both on standard gear. I'm going to upgrade this Spring and may be interested in selling my 29's. PM me if you want and we can discuss.

Henny

I have/had 26" AK Bushwheels on my PA-18. I loved them - I just upgraded to 31" last week and I have my 26"s for sale. They have about 40 hours on them with about 160 landings only in grass. When I purchased my SuperCub it had 8"tires and I thought the jump to 31" would be a drastic change for a pilot who only had Citabria time. As things have progressed I can see my flight/landing envelope opening more rapidly than I expeded so I decided to go up to the 31's sooner than I thought. They are $2850.00 new on the AK Bushwheel website. Make me an offer, I would like to move them as soon as possible. Check out my You tube page: http://www.youtube.com/user/Cubonaut875 and you can see many videos of the tires on the plane. I have one specifically when I first put them on the plane:

Ok, I might have lied - they have 50 hours on them and about 200 grass only landings. If you watch all my videos you'll see about half of the landings on them.

I have used these 26" tires all over and in some pretty ruff and soft places they have worked well, but would like a set of 31's. I have 3" extended gear, witch gives me good prop clearence. But still trying to convince my wife I need 31" safety wheels. :lol:Picture 266.jpg

I agree - AK Bushwheels are great, great service, great company. And the 26" are great for 99% of what most people land on. Although I'm not an expert in this, I think the 31" get you another .5% utility for the average user. I'm not sure, for all but the specialist, that the 35's gain any, seems there may be a greater loss of hard surface functionality. If there is some one out there lurking - clue me in - if I am wrong. Of course I live in Illinois, not Alaska - or even cooler yet - New Zealand. My landing experience is limited to dodgeing ears of corn and I'm a new comer to the Supercub world. P.S. See you all at Oshkosh/New Holstein

This is great. Thanks for the reference pics guys! Both the 26 and 29s look smart. I haven't got the 3x3 extension (yet) so am leaning towards the 29s at this stage... I do have a habit of changing my mind though!

Whats the deal with adding extra rubber?? Do they wear quickly? Im exclusively Grass, Paddocks and Tundra. Do they hole easily?

Schuler.. you must be one of the few in the US with the old carb air box like mine?!
3MP.. Id give my left testicle to have my cub parked outside my house like yours!

There are a few around - it is a PA18- 135 L21B, it was rebuilt in 2007 with a 150 Lycoming. I think the carb box changed in the late 50's. You must have an L21B, I seem to remember that the records show a significant number shipped to New Zealand in the mid 1950's for military use.

From what I understand, it's the taxiing on pavement that wears them. I would think that they do not puncture easily after watching the CubDriver and BigRocks/Long Props videos.

Sadly - it is not my house in the picture - it is a friends house.

Hope I get to travel to New Zealand someday - I've wanted to go since I saw the "Champions of the Wave" video

The larger tire the more absorption. I think the 26" BW gives a bigger footprint where a 29: and 31" give more shock absorption. I had 29" on my Pacer (shorter fuselage). I think I would prefer 31 on it now. Have you seen the picture of the Producer landing at Valdez? Those 35s are collapsed all the way to the wheel absorbing much impact. It was a way cool short landing.

Cheers Steve. Iv seen a Utube clip of a modified 'cub' with a skull & cross bones on the tail and 35(?)" tires doing a short landing on a riverbed... is that the one? The way I see it is this.. those Massive tires get you going into places where the rocks kicked up will smash your tail plane. As it is I can stop almost as short with my current 800x6. The stones I kick up can hole my fabric if Im unlucky. Id like the A of A increase and more absorbtion to let me handle lumpy riverbeds etc without the airframe taking a hammering. Iv got a 52" prop so have good Takeoff performance but lose out on cruise speed. Having those baloons wouldnt help my A to B times... It seems most people are leaving the 26 in fav of bigger. I appreciate theres not a lot difference between the 29 and 31.

No problem Just got back to town. I am going out to the airport this afternoon. I have a 182 in the hangar and the J3 & SC tails fit under that. I'll let you know when I get back.

.........Mike

69 1/2 to center of Spinner
13 1/2 to center of axle with 8lbs pressure

What STC (if any) did you use for the -12? The AirframesAlaska site doesn't show the -12 listed as an approved airplane, but I've seen them mounted on plenty of -12s. I'm in FL so unfortunately Alaska ruled don't apply.

It's been a while, but I think the 26's on my -12 were Goodyears...

Thanks. My buddy's -12 came with 26" Goodyears, but they're pretty hard. We both want to switch to a softer tire. I still have 8.00x6s on mine and want to go to 26" or 29" ABWs.
