You'all be careful out there, ya hear?...

Somebody please splain to me how the Cub (N743) that crashed on the gravel bar 8/31 was on a "pleasure flight"... It is registered to the Department of the Interior. Are they out joyriding in the planes we bought 'em?

And then yesterday, a Husky, also registered to the Dept of the Interior, crashed in Alaska. This one was described as being on a "public use" flight.

2 in 4 days.. out here in the real (private sector) world, we'd be out of business.

The Husky crashed here in the Copper Valley...The strip he was on is a tricky one...The Pilot is a law enforcement ranger...doing his job...checking on a public use cabin here in the park I'm sure. To bad for him. Glad he's alright.

Four of 'em, unfortunately, one was fatal...

Didn't another thread talk about this last one and didn't the passenger have surgery on her cheek? Is that not considered and injury?? YIKES! The FAA/NTSB are tough!

cafi

I agree LJ, surgery is usually result of an injury sustained from an incident/accident.... Government..............

These are "preliminary" reports, usually issued before all the information is known... It's actually relatively rare that a "preliminary" isn't amended before finalized...

At least she's going to be alright, I'll have to ask my buddy if that cub was shoulder harness equipt or not....

Can you find out? We have an ongoing discussion about shoulder harnesses at j3-cub.com

They should just be put in, we did it. No different then a Super Cub...

I'm rebuilding my SC and put in over $400+ in shoulder harness/seatbelts and I really believe it is one of the most important safety mods you can do....

I absolutely agree with Pat. I can't imagine not having shoulder harnesses.

I hit hard enough to tear the engine off my 12, but thanks to a harness my face ended up no worse than it ever was - - - I got a very light bruise on my shoulders from the harness, which when considering the alternative, felt GREAT.

Here's another vote for good shoulder harnesses. I could easily have decorated the instrument panel of a C 185 with my face, but BAS harnesses prevented it.

Good harnesses belong in ANY airplane. With the FAA guidance permitting latitude in these installations, there just isn't any reason not to install them.

MTV

Why do you need shoulder harness in a J3 Your flying from the back seat so all you really need is a folding front seat. Your face is really far away from the instrument panel and most pilots have their dog in the front.

Jerry,

The lady who had facial injuries in the J-3 recently was in the front seat--ie: a passenger

In the back, you can still face plant on the top of the front seat back--folding seat backs are a mod, and not all have them. Even with a folding seat back, though, I wouldn't be surprised if in a big impact you might still hit the front seat from the rear. The human body really gets fluid in a severe deceleration.

Shoulder harnesses at all seat stations are a great idea.

60 knots?

Skukum,

Go to the NTSB site, and read the NTSB document describing the preliminary information.

I'm thinking it must be in error, but..?
