Absolutely and you make your own decisions. I'm pointing out a fact that was beaten into my head for a long time. Heat allows the nylon in the nyloc to relax or melt. Once it relaxes it loses its retaining value. All steel lock nuts won't do that. No measurable weight penalty and very little cost difference plus extra safety margin means that I'll always use steel in the engine bay

That's all I'm saying. What you do with your nuts is entirely your business.

After playing with Mike's Nord Lock washer samples I'll be switching my exhaust nut lock washers to Nord Locks. Anyone with an interest in bolt retention should order a demo kit. Very convincing.
 
Was it Lycoming that had the exhaust flange nuts that released with a wrench? As soon as you backed off the nut, an insert released it's clamping force on the stud. Slick. Worked great. And now they don't make them. sigh

FWIW, working temp for standard nylocks is 250*. I'll keep an eye on it as I put hours on the plane. It doesn't warrant this much attention at this point.

please note from my perspective your work and posts are worth a lot to me.
I cant see a point in my life yet where I could ever put together the time to do what you and Bill Rusk and others have done, and taken the time to show the rest of us not only how it's done, but how it's done on the highest level.

Stewart, It's been my experience in life, that some folk don't care one wit bout the particular topic that maybe being discussed .......Those folk , from the get go are looking for the hole in your program.....just so they can point it out. I think it stems from a severe lake of self affirmation that manifests itself in the way a lot of people respond !
Instead of noting what a great looking mount you have and the great workmanship that is demonstrated in the thread, They try and elevate themselves to the self appointed position of ....LET ME TELL YA WHAT YOU DID WRONG.......It's my understanding that a lot of wifeys can be this way.....maybe these guys have been married so long they have adopted that wonderful trait !:oops:

The Nylock comment I posted above was friendly advice offered after complimenting the simple and elegant solution SB arrived at for alternate air.

But, in the case mentioned, why not just steel lock it and remove heat softening worries? Stubbornness?:)

In this case Dave was trying to present constructive criticism that you may not have been aware of. Generally elastic stop nuts are frowned upon in close proximity to the heat of the engines. It likely will be satisfactory as you have in this application.

the ONLY spots all metal nuts get used are on the lug to fuselage bolts, to provide a couple more steel threads, and on hot exhaust applications... don't know where you guys come up with this crap....

Thanks for posting the video....It brought a memory long gone, of a kid in the living room with his Dad watching 1 of only 2 channels available and remembering that the kid didn't get it .....But Dad took the time to explain the moral of the story for him.......Just awesome ...Again thanks .

Dumb question I meant to ask earlier. I saw the electric trim and a modified yoke. After that beautiful cover job, how does the stabilizer leading edge move up and down?

Look at that. The stripes even line up!

43.13 dosent say a thing about engine compartment, just aps of 250 degerees or more.
Mike, is right here, other than cylinder head and exhaust, what actually gets over 250degrees?
 
Ultimately it'll go onto hydraulic wheel skis. I'm not an Airglas LH fan but I may use them since they're local and easy. I may go with Rostis. Better ground clearance and about the same cost last time I checked. Not a priority at the moment.
