Hello Folks,

Any Skiflyer of you knows about the additional Tube / Strut which
is attached on the Gear Axle going up tho the front
attachment bolt on the fuselage on the 150´s

I watched that on a Cub of a friend here in Austria who has the same
Aero retract. Ski fittet on his cub than i am going to install..

Anyone knows where i can get one or maybe a set of this
Gear tubes is anywhere around for sale :)

Still 2 feet snow on our airfield

Guessing you are talking about a 150 cub, and the strut is a stiffleg for the AWB retract skis.

Aerro skis do not require this stiff leg, and the ski attach fittings from Aerro ski do not allow for this piece either.

I have a couple hundred hours on my Aerro skis, and they work fine for wheel skis, But read the instructions for installation!

I can offer a couple of tips also, but not in public.....

have fun.

well after looking closer to the pics of the skis that ill pick up on monday,
i recognized that they are federal ski..(the hydraulic ones..)

also my friend´s 150hp is equipped with them.

So do i have to install such a stiffness leg on the main landing gear?

Matthias.

Matthias,

You need to find out what model skis you are talking about. For sure the C-2200 skis require the extra tube. Wipaire should be able to provide the parts. You will also have to weld the fittings onto the gear legs, which is more than you will do in your home workshop.

If you are looking at AWB 2500 wheel skis, they require a slightly different attachment hardware, but similar.

Find out specifically what make and model ski you are talking about, and get back to us.

Right now, Wipaire at http://www.wipaire.com owns all the old Fluidyne and Federal (I think) materials. They should be able to provide parts, if nobody else can come up wiht the parts. If you are buying the skis, you might ask the guy selling them about the gear legs that went with them.

It's easier to just swap gear legs than modify yours. Unless he has really crappy gear legs, and yours are perfect.

Yup, if you are getting AWB skis, get the gear.

Atlee in Anchorage can build you a set of stifflegs and ski attach fittings that bolt onto your plane, but the stifleg length is directly influenced by the length of your gear, and I mean to 1/4".

When I bought mine a few years back, I just had them built with a new set of gear, that way they fit when bolted on. Get the gear that fits the stiffleg!

Again, if Aerro skis, no need for the stiff leg, and the bolt on fittings from Aerro will work fine, Just may need a reamer and a drill. Take the gear off for ease.

You might look at a thread I started a month or so ago regarding this extra "strut", with photo. Is this the piece you are talking about???

If so, do you folks have any feedback as to whether you can leave the strut on with just wheels on? It is a pain to take off, put on, given that the gear have to be removed to install/destall. Thanks.

Yes you can leave the stiff leg on when you remove the skiis. That's what we do.

Got them

Howdy Folks,

I GOT THEM,

they are not pretty, but i got almost all with the
FEDERAL 2200 Hydraulic skis yesterday.

I also posted wipeair a mail in asking them if they have paperwork
for the skis, like drawings how to attach them or a part list.

What i am missing, are the 2 Attach fittings which are bolted on the axle
i think additionally with a stiffnes leg... hmmm..
Does atlee have those???
And,
do you leave the stiffnes leg really on in summertime , is the plane not
jumping like a goose with stiffer landing gear??

Well im looking further for interesting ski discussion.

Matthias

The stiff leg does not make the gear any stiffer than original. It just keeps it from twisting under ski side loads.

Well,

as all the discussion points out, i am going to get the stiffer leg for the
150 hp Cub and leave it on during summer operations.

Here in Austria, Pipers of the government were fitted with skis in the
60´s and have flown up to the 80´s.

I know nowadays lightweight skis would be perfect, like
the ones from Thomas Dietrich , or also yours from Airglas - Landes.

I made a certification procedure 1 year ago with an Austrian Cub first attached the Dietrich (ex Fernandez) skis, seems to be no problem

8)
Well i hope to have the skis operated soon,

We plan for next year the first EUROPEAN SKI MEETING
(keep you informed)

yeah i do really NOT Torque the Cub
