Whirlwind Prop

I have one. It works great. The reason that I bought it is that I can adjust the pitch to suit the occasion, though I seem to have settled on one pitch. I do have some small places to visit which will necessitate lowering the pitch for performance. The big advantage is having only one prop rather than having several with different pitches.

Mine is on the way to me as we speak, but it will be spring before I get to try it our on the WB project. Being 3 hours form places like JC and others I look forward to tweaking the prop for max cruise, then dialing it back when I get there. Last prop was a 4 blade Warp Drive, was a great light weight prop, spun up instantly, but a pain in the butt (X4) to change the pitch on.

I have one on my SQ-2 with an 0-375 Lyc. 10 mph differance between low pitch and high pitch. Takes one minute to change pitch. Just 5 clicks on the allen wrench.---Harold

Whirlwind propellers 20lbs. Whirlwind Aviation prop 47lbs.

Are you talking about Whirlwind aviation or Whirlwind propellers ? They are different.
Doug
I am talking about the whirlwind prop. Whirlwind aviation has one that changes pitch easier but weighs 27 lbs. more.

There are two different prop companies which use the name "Whirlwind". It appears that they both now make a ground adjustable prop which fits the 0-320 and 0-360 engines.

http://whirlwindpropellers.com/aircraft/?p=1637 diameters range from 70" -72" It appears that you need to remove the spinner, loosen four bolts, twist the blades, attach a protractor to set angle, tighten four bolts and reinstall spinner. Time?

and this one:
http://www.whirlwindaviation.com/props/STOLGseries.asp diameters are 77" and 80" which has a simple quick pitch change. The 77" 200G is the one which I have. Place supplied allen wrench through hole in spinner, loosen lock pin, with larger allen wrench turn blade adjusting screw the number of clicks you wish, tighten lock pin, done. Just one minute and you are done.

The price on the Whirlwind now is over $7000 my Catto 84/44 will cruise at 103mph on 35s and still does all but the shortest of gravel bars and cost half as much and weighs nearly 30lbs less.

Whirlwind also has a 78" It should do better than the 72". I like the way the STOL G series adjusts so quick but it would be 11 lbs heavier than what I have now. I am nose heavy enough with my 0-360

The one from W.W. aviation cost a lot is heavy but is easy to adjust and by all accounts is great prop..
.The one that I have ahead of my 160hp 0320 is from W.W propeller is much less money ,is under 20LB#s ,78"long ,but takes 15to20 minutes to change adjustment. You need a torque wrench and level to adjust it.
Over I like the prop I have. It lets me have both a cruse and a climb prop in one. and gets some weight of the nose.

That sounds great! How much speed do you gain when you changing pitch?

Mine is the heavier more expensive one. The cruise speed varies from a low of about 90 mph to a high of about 120 mph on floats.

When I have it set for best take off I turn 2450 @ 95mph. At this setting I need to be mindful to not over speeding the prop any time but a steep climb .WW makes it very clear "Do not over speed the prop ". When set for cruse I turn 2700 in level flight and get just under 110 mph @2350 .I don't remember what the cruse setting speed is at 2450, guess I should keep better track .
My plane is not a Super cub.
