Experts, I'm trying to upgrade some old wheels with mechanical brakes that have a limit of 1000lbs that have an AD for cracking and need to be inspected frequently. I'm trying to find some wheels to get me to 1500lbs each and still use my mechanical brakes. Based on my research it appears I need some 3050 wheels. I was able to get my hands on some 3040 wheels that based on what I can find I can convert to 3050 wheels with just a different brake drum. In theory I could just use my existing drum in my old wheel, but my understanding is if you try to remove it from my existing wheels its going to destroy the drum and possibly the wheel as well. Does anyone happen to know where I could find either the 3050 inner wheel assembly part number 161-01600 with a drum already installed or where I could find a serviceable brake drum part 169-00201 to convert 3040s to 3050s. I'm coming up empty at this point.

Sounds like the Champ dilemma. The wheels crack anyway, they have an AD, and the brakes are inadequate for crowded airport use. I hold two field approvals for replacing the entire setup with Grove - wheels, discs, calipers masters, and reservoirs. Owners report greatly enhanced ground handling. Highly recommended.
I don't have any current pictures of the 1000lb wheels, but the 3040/3050 diagram is below. The drum is in two pieces and I really only need the piece that fits inside of the wheel. I'm looking for part number 3 or part number 1 with 3 still installed.

Bob you are spot on. I agree hydraulic disk brakes are the best option, but based on my research we are talking $7,500 in parts not including labor and I am not wanting to invest that right now. During my next recovering that will be on my to do list as I'd love to have it, but I can run on the existing wheels for the time being.
Ultimately, my airport is not crowded with a grass strip and plenty of room. Mechanical drum brakes are fine for now. I just want a little extra safety factor and one less AD to comply with. Thanks for the suggestion!

Last year it was closer to $4200 - but there is a part 21.9 problem that needs to be solved above the ACO level.
