Had a prop strike, then fixed (Again, I wasn't driving it)

Standard length gear
Large Gar Aero tail wheel
Pulse Light system

All winter covers
Good panel, with gyro system
1 King flip/flop Comm,
Transponder
Pretty much has all the bells and whistles of an Alaskan cub

Overall, Interior and Exterior 8
Nice working cub.

Thanks for any comments.

Hello,

First it does not weigh any less than 1175, probably more like 1200+.

Need to know more about the engine, Total time, time since major, time since teardown, who did the work.
Next corrosion would be on the lists of look fors, and a real good deep, look at the logs. The logs accurate and complete?

Go for $65-75k, depending on engine? Sounds a lot like mine, but with less time. That engine sounds it could be the real deal breaker.

Now, now, I just went and looked at the current weight and balance. I was wrong on the numbers. It weights 1130, no B.S.

The engine runs just fine. It burns a quart of oil every 8 to 10 hours. The prop strike was 8 years agos and the work was done by Dan's in Anchorage. The 1650 is the total time, the engine had never been rebuilt. I have over the years put on several new cylinders, and changed the mags.

As for the logs, I deal with a lot of planes, and these logs are very good. Everything on this plane has been documented and is legal.

Thanks,
Mike

Basically the engine is run out. So a buyer will need to consider a new/rebuilt engine at about 17K right off the bat. It might go awhile but then again it might not. How old is the fabric? 79? If so the fabric is 25 years old, and will soon need to be replaced, even if it punches good it needs to come off to see what is under it. 25 years is a long time.
Where is it from? Alaska and Florida are real hard on airplanes.
Tough assessment, but just my opinion.

Aside to C-185:

If I were ever to sell the Cub I would never come on this web site and ask "what's it worth". Man these SC.Arrugh guys know everything about the cub and are brutal in their assessments. And, unfortunately, are right on as is Bill.

What's it worth?? Try this.... "How much can I get for it if I advertise in on a medical website where thirty out of a million doctor millionaires will think, 'Hey, a Piper Cub.... I could use one of those.'"

Yard Dart, where are you from and how long have you owned that plane? I know someone with an old SC at CC and I'm wondering if it's you or just a coincidence.

Hey dart, did you trade her in for a ranger or another plane at cubcrafters? Sorry i could'nt have run into you when you picked up charli gulf.

Hi Mike,

So you are thinking about stepping up to a bigger airplane that you can haul the family around in. Hmmm... Let's see, your wife and two kids- Sounds like a PA-14! Unless you want a little more room for your mother-in-law that is, then you can pick up something else (unless you want to bungee her to the strut). So great, glad to hear you've come around after all that crap-talking this summer about your cub vs. a 14!

As far as the flying we did this summer, I know I wasn't even close to your performance, but just know that if you were flying the 14 it'd be a different story.

So let's work out a deal here, I'll take your 18 + $30K for the 14 (we know mine is fresh from the annual from hell as well as about everything else that can go wrong in a year- good airplane now). That way next summer I MIGHT be able to get in and out of the places you take my 14- a bit of an equalizer :p

I'll be in Nome on Tuesday- we can work the details out over some beers... :drinking: Maybe Tony can come out to his garage from time to time (on breaks from diaper changes) to arbitrate.

what is it worth

I might as well put 37M on the 'for sale' block too, b/c now that the bambino has arrived I only get to fly when I'm paroled from diaper changes

Simon- good news. 10-28 is being extended to 8000' so you shouldn't have any problem getting in and out of Nome next summer in the 14...not that I should be giving instruction on STOL technique.

Stay off the breaks AHHHH.

Hey, I always felt pretty comfortable this summer in and out of 5000 feet. Of course, it was always blowing about 20 right down the runway... And I'd better trump Mike on the comeback here and say that yes, I did back-taxi most of the time but you never know when my throttle cable might break so it was probably a good safety plan.

Tony, you might not be using your airplane much right now with the squid at home, but you are using your noise-cancelling headset at night, right?

noise?

We have a barge order of 9V batteries on the way!

Seriously though, it is sad to see a guy that can really work a cub thinking about selling it for a Cessna family wagon.

Oh well, he'll probably still get the 180 in under the 12 & 14. Man, that sucks.
