Went For Broke . . . Now Broke

A few months ago I mentioned to a few friends that I was starting to look for an airplane. I was leisurely getting things together when I received an alert about a J3 with PA-11 conversion with wheels, floats, and skis for sale about 3.5 hours away from me. For one night, I put it aside and then determined I was making a mistake not to look into it.

I went up to see the airplane, checked the logbooks, and determined it was worth a prebuy by a suitable mechanic. The prebuy was satisfactory with some minor discrepancies which the seller and I agreed to split. Sunday, April 20th, 2014, I went to pick up the airplane and had the floats/skis/seaplane prop and various accessories trucked back and I hopped in this strange airplane with a map and some trail mix and took off.

We arrived at South St. Paul after approximately 2.5 hrs of flying and found a hangar to borrow for a few days. She'll have a permanent home soon!

I have to thank the many people that have helped me through the process, whether in technical expertise or just a kick in the butt to not give up. Steve Pierce, Tom Ford (everyone's favorite Masshole), Tim Farris, the wonderful folks at Dakota Cub, and many others made this all possible.

One neat thing is that I bought the airplane 6 years to the day after I took my first lesson in a Cub in Hartford, WI. Now she is sitting in front of a Caravan in the hangar . . . but she will have her own home soon.

I now have to figure out how to keep the Super 18 and 21Y from getting too jealous. First world problems.

Hoping to make Sentimental Journey! (Even though she is an Oklahoma kid)

I've always wanted to see what Ponca City was like, and if anything remained. If she goes to Oklahoma does she end up coming back with orange Xs on the wings?

Might bring a Ponca City parking sign to Lock Haven . . . there's at least me and Speedy Dave.

Wow, what a great story, Amy! Congratulations to you. I am happy beyond words for you and wish you many, many happy flights in your aircraft.

Your aircraft. Has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?!

Randy

Congrats. Not sorry in advance for the TP and the porta-potty parking cones at Lock Haven! :toilet:up:cheers

Congratulations, Amy! Broke and happy is way better than rich and miserable.

Anne.

Good for you. Your understanding of the parts business will take on an owner's perspective. :-)

She will be headed to DCA to get some goodies soon! Very excited to put some little upgrades in (even if I will become more poor ;)). Working there definitely instilled a respect and appreciation for doing things the right way, instead of some hokey easy way out. But, pay to play I guess!

Congrats. Amy she's a beautiful bird ...how about Johnson Creek this year???

Congrats Amy. I'm downsizing to J3, having my first lesson in one 60 years ago hate to say.

Congrats Amy, was nice to see you at SnF. Looking forward to seeing your cub, and watching you beat Douten like a rented mule

Jim

Congratulations Amy! Nothing like owning a Cub! From the picture, I take it that it will be based at KSGS?

Good for you. Might as well do it while you have no money and lots of time. Eventually you move into the no time and no money stage of life!

Congrats Amy, I was going to say to bring it to Greenville so I could get beat by a girl again:toilet before Glenn did. But I guess Scouter  fired the first shot.
