We are back from East Tennessee...

Clyde and Susan

BENEFACTOR
After over 100 flying hours, over 5,000 miles, and three weeks in a PA-11, we are back home. Susan and I took turns in the front seat. We had a great time at the fly-in. We will post the exact flying time and mileage as soon as we add it all up. We have a lot of pictures ( 4 gigabytes worth) and I'll pick a few of the best ones and post them as soon as I catch up on all of my business e-mail. There were some weather delays and some wind that we should have let delay us. The airplane worked flawlessly. We managed to recover from a 45 degree major gust picking us up and blowing us off the runway at Moriarty, New Mexico with no damage to the plane. I think the VGs may have contributed to that one but I also think the VGs made it possible to get back in the air and land again across the runway into the wind. It was a great adventure. We're looking forward to some more next summer. ...Clyde

Clyde and Susan-

Great to hear you are safe and sound at home. Thanks you for attending the Fly-In. Everyone at 0A9 asks every time I'm there about you both and if you had returned safely to CA.

I was stationed at White Sands Missile Range in NM for a couple of years and learned first hand how the wind can blow out there. I can imagine how "exciting" some of those NM landings were :-)

We'll look for you both next year.

Steve

Clyde and Susan,

Another epic journey and another round of jealousy from the rest of us wishing we we take the time to do the things that you to do!

Welcome home!

I was in Moriarity on the 23rd of Oct and left the morning of the 24th. I must have just missed you guys.

Hi Steve, How was the wind when you were there? I'll get Susan to look in her trip log to see how much we missed, it can't be by much. ...Clyde

The day I landed it was 3 or 4 mph, I believe I landed on runway 8. But 70 miles away at Tucumcari it was gusting 30 mph from the north. We stayed at Moriarity. We caught up with the wind in the Texas panhandle and it was blowing from the north all the way home to Tulsa.

We spent the night at Moriarity also. The next morning the wind was much more reasonable. The FBO (glider tow) let us tie down in front of his hangar which made a good wind break and loaned us an old pickup truck to go to town for the night. After the sporty arrival and refueling things got a lot better and turned out O.K. I still have to ask Susan what day we were there. ...Clyde

"And I've been from Tuscon to Tucumcari, Tahachapi to Tonapah."...

Lowell George's "Willin" is one of my all time favorite songs. I sure would like to fly or even drive to those places someday.... It is on the long list, not the short list...

Yep, Linda Ronstadt's version is my favorite!

Actually, the very BEST version is Linda Rhondstat singing with Lowell George live on Studio C on KBCO in Boulder (many many years ago, but on my ipod). The whole session was incredible.

In my humble opinion...

How did you like that truck, we used it too. :o Beats walking, I liked the door opener on the drivers side. :)

It got us to town and back. The bungee cord door handle worked. He taped the window closed; good thing, we had ice on the plane the next morning. ...Clyde
