Most hobby forums show whether there are unread posts without having to click and enter the thread.

I initially get onto the site on the "forums" page.
There's a blue "new posts" box on the upper RH side that I click.
Takes me to a list of all threads with new, unread posts.
Plus a list of older threads that I've already read.

I am referring to the way BCP's forums and Beechtalk's forums, for example, are set up. To the left of the row for every thread title or category it will tell you whether there are unread posts.

So, this system (different from what those guys use) bolds the forum name to tell you there are posts in that forum that you have not read.

Same applies to unread posts on a thread. The title will be bold.
