Kase: 41.5 mph and 43.5 mph stall speed. Now I don't feel so bad getting my butt kicked by Jerry. Now if we can get some of the others out there to post their stall speeds we might see what mods really work and which ones don't. Crash
I had around 15 gal of gas and temp was 80F. I will try it again if I get to a place thats 3-4000 feet lower in elevation. I think my actual landing speed would of been higher because to go 43.5 in ground effect the nose was ludicrously high.
Ive never tried a helicopter airspeed indicator. I really dont see the point in having one. Even coyote hunting you very seldom get below 45. When your going slow your just going by site picture, feel and noise. My dad told me I shouldnt be flying around under 40 anyhow. In the winter time my airspeed indicates 35 at touchdown going as slow as I can with power. It said 38 before I put the Micro VGS on. When its hot it indicates around 20 or so at touchdown.
I use a helicopter airspeed indicator. Its the first thing I do when I get a new plane. I use it on final. I know if I am at this speed over this tree, swamp, log etc. I'm close to what is needed to get in there. A fast acting GPS is also good for this.
Hi Kase. You got me going back to the drawing board now buddy. I would have bet a horse that your ground effect speed would be lower. Let's see what others come up with. Thanks. Jerry.
Well, what always worries me about helicopter speedometer is that when someone is in or out of the back seat or when loads vary the plane will have a different pitch at different loads and speeds so the gauge will vary.
But I did have a guy aboard on the way to 8D1 who was calling towers with a Garmin 296 (is that right - 296?) and I was amazed at the response of this GPS. I do believe as folks claim it could get you down safe in sudden IFR. It was scary to bank left or right and watch the mock instrument display react instantly as the Turn n Bank and the DG reacted at once. Now on this thing speed variation is NOW.
I was lucky though as he didn't bring the cig lighter plug and his battery went out halfway up the Mississippi. At that point I could once more wander about the sky without having my wrists slapped for being off course.
I have a helo airspeed indicator in my 12, that registers to 0. It's a kick in the pants to see how slow I can make it read hanging on the prop with full (102") flaps. Only do it at altitude but its fun "hanging" around. Can be headed east and the GPS says I'm going west with a good wind. Have gotten it to read 22 mph with 2 on board. Then the real thrill is to add lotsa power and kick it around with the rudder and head the other way. One of these days I'm going to just see what the turning radius is using the GPS. I'll bet it approaches 2-300 feet or less.

It does nothing different than the standard ASI starting at 40. I'm sure as hell not gonna try to land it at 22 indicated but it is an interesting thought. I'm an airspeed freak on final. My short field technique involves accurate spot landings, not in using the last ounce of lift generated by airspeed. Land on the spot, dump the flaps, stay on the mains and get on the brakes. Works for me. Uh Oh, here come the 3 pointers!! LOL
