Trout fishing again.

Torch

GONE WEST
Fairbanks, Alaska
Went out to one of my favorite lakes last night. Fishing wasn't great but I managed to hook up 6 nice trout. Three of them either broke my line or got off before I could release them. Jerry, this is the lake we were going to fly to if you would have been able to fish at night when you came up in July. Here is a really nice male trout that I caught. You can see my secret fly in his mouth. It is a huge blue ant pattern. They really like this color for some reason. I have used black and I catch fish on them but not as many. The blue works better for some reason. No damsel flies in there either. There is a big brown caddis fly that hatches off of the lake and that is what the trout are eating. This should get you ready for next year Jerry.

Do you fish off the floats or the bank?

There is a deep lake across the bay that I have been fly fishing from the floats. (Trout and Land Locked Silvers)

But them all seem to know that they just need to circle around torwards the tail of the plane a few times and off they go....

Dang Torch - why don't ya rub it in a little - that's it - the house, wife and kids are on the market - I'm getting floats and moving north!!!! :o

Seriously - sweet photo - keep'em coming.

Jeez Torch,

Jolene's trout up at Wrench Creek was bigger than that by a lot, actually that looks to be about the size of the lure she used. She got a reindeer the week before, then we floated the Kobuk and today I have her cleaning the windows on the cub.

Don't sell the family Gunny, doing all that woman's work will kill before your time. :D :D :D

Gunny,

Float flying is supreme. I like it more than anything. If I were you I would beg, borrow or steal a set of Edo 2000's.

Alex,

A lot of the lakes have those fold a boats on the shores. I think guys try hauling them around to lakes and they don't like hauling it all the time so they just leave them on the shore. I use them and then put them back JUST LIKE I FOUND THEM. No one has ever came in and told me to not use their boat. I have never seen anyone on these lakes when I am there. The guy that owns the boat I use on this lake has a C170 parked near my airplane but I haven't seen him to introduce myself. Most folks don't care if you use the boats they leave if you put them back (clean) right like they left them. Fly fishing off of floats is hard.

Mike,

Well these aren't Kotzebue size fish. I want to come out to the Bue and do some pike fishing. There are some 40 inch pike in that big lake up there and I want to catch and release a few of them. Isaac Lake is still closed but I was thinking about calling Kenny Gallahorn and asking him if I can use it at my own risk. All our landings are at our own risk anyways. :drinking: Hey Mike tell Jolene I am having a fish fry again sometime around the 24th or 25th out in Kotzebue. Halibut will be served. You two are welcome to come on over. Hopefully you two will be there when I am.

Fishing

Nice pictures Torch. I fished up there with some friends one time, The native trout we were catching started at 6 pounds, (catch and release) and fly fishing only. While sitting in the cabin that night we got to talking about our collection of gear. One guy collected old fly rods, another guy collected old Fly fishing reels. I told them I collect those old Wicker fishing creels and wondered if they knew of any ? They all looked kind of puzzled and said you don't see many of those up here in Alaska because the fish are too big to fit in the baskets. We had a good laugh over that, they were right.
