Torque Tubes

On Patrol

I am thinking of getting after the torque tube problem...or should I say stiffness in Miss Daisy. The 1956A model 18 has the old style straight sticks and torque tubes. This makes for a solid stick however requires definite trimming. I have been told by many that I must have to muscle her to the ground. That is true.
The question is how do I legally convert her to the new tube and bent stick configuration. I have a full metal belly so it is possible to gain access from below. I saw a posting a while back from Pal Hal but can I make this change of welding on extensions and purchasing new sticks or do I need to purchase entire assemblies and who would have them?
Thanks
John

I'm thinking the 56 should have had bent sticks and newer tube config, so you probably just need to get the parts and put it back to original.

That opens the question if it was that way originally, and I am not sure of that, then can I convert by performing the welding shown by Pal Hal and only purchase new sticks. She is certificated so the paper is a must as it is impossible to get field approvals in this neck of the woods.

no , I think you will have to replace the torque tube with an original, however, you could possibly use the main part of the old tube and weld on new or used towers and consider it owner built parts. reduing the old towers (if possible) to be exactly like newer original could be considered owner built.

Ok put on your straight skis Ron and I will put on mine to get out of the WAD. Though I am on the route of grooming the strip.

John, I have a pair of torque tube saddles out of an 18. Don't know if they are the same or different than yours, but they are still attached to tubing so could be cut accordingly and are in good shape. Let me know if you want them. Also have the gear fittings from same fuselage. Reid
