Who has their cowl black on the top? I see the occasional Supercub painted this way. Does it really help with sun glare? Just curious if it is for functionality or aesthetics only?

Mine is painted that way and yes, it helps with the sun glare without a doubt.

Flat black cowl or nose cone top is industry standard even on airplanes where the pilot doesn't see it from the cockpit. It cuts down not only on glare, but also on reflection (ghosting on the wind shield). 'Course there's that pesky appeal to vanity: it might override operational needs if allowed to contaminate the decision.

I like flat black at the w/s base because it looks cool. 90% of being cool is looking cool.

The only absolutely effective way to keep cool(independent of OAT or inside AT) is NOT to have the propeller stop!

My old cub had a flat black top cowl, my new experimental doesn't - it's blue to match main color. It's a non issue and have never noticed a difference.

The flat black also help hide the hail dents on you tired old floatplane that weathers everything mother nature throws at it 6 months of every year. And a free engine preheater on those chilly sunny fall mornings.

I have a shiny red top cowl. All was well for a couple hundred hours. Then one evening the setting sun on 27 was VERY bright. I still haven't changed to flat black but I understand why this paint scheme is so popular.

My SC is comming back to life with a Black cowl top and if I could find them black fastiners as I've been blinded by the shiny stainless too many times.

Im using matte black on the instrument panel, inside boot cowl, and inner windshield strip. After some difficulty in trials, and some help here, I found a SEM topcoat product called hot rod black that is a catalyzed system. Test spray turned out a dull matte sheen, should be best for absorbing glare and accentuating the instruments.

Sir,

If you have a powder coater near you, you might ask him if he has, or can get, a flat black 'krinkle' (sp?) coating. The coater I have locally has done some small pieces for me and I like the appearance -- very close to the black 'krinkle' finish on the instrument panels of yesteryear. He told me that a number of Harley-Davidson riders have used it to refinish some parts on their bikes.
