Tailwheel Spring With

How wide should the tail wheel spring for a 3200 Scott (single hole) be? I have a four-leaf spring that came with my project. It is approx. 30 mm (1.18") wide. The slot in the tailwheel is approx. 45 mm (1 3/4") wide. Is there some kind of bushing going between the tailwheel and the spring?

So.... I am guessing I need a new tailwheel spring. What would be the spring of choice? Univair lists one for the PA-12 (p/n PA12TWSPNEU), which seems to be a three-leaf spring. They also carry a PA-18 four-leaf spring (p/n PA18TW4L-1). How does one see how wide these springs are??

The PA18 springs are 1 1/4". The Pawnee spring is 1 1/2". There is a spacer that goes in the tailwheel mount that narrows it to 1 1/4". You can also use the pawnee spring and leave the adapter out.
Depends on how you're going to use the aircraft.

John,

Thanks.

I just learned from the Univair catalog that I need to purchase the p/n 3243-1 installation kit, which is for the 1 1/4" spring.

The std. bracket is for the 1 3/4" spring.

That little oversight is going to cost another $87...... for a spacer, a bushing and two bolts...?!? If I were to speak my mind about that, Steve would have to take this to R&R...!!

1 3/4" Pawnee tail spring on a cub. No spacer required. Thats how I would do it.

Does a 1 3/4" spring fit thru the aft attach bracket on a PA-12 (directly beneath the rudder post). Mine has a rubber shock pad sandwiched in there w/ the std. 3 leaf spring. Does that stay when you use a 4 leaf 1 3/4" spring?
Thanks
Chris

Slightly off-topic, but - kase, how did you make the 3-leaf Pawnee legal on your 18? I just orderd it and installed it (removing the aformentioned spacer from the Scott 3200). My mechanic mentioned something about an STC and I said 'I don't think so'. Is this simply a log book entry, or do you have to get a field approval, or is it really an STC (and if that is the case, then who would be the STC holder)?

Eric, got a field approval. I think CC has a STC but for a 4 leaf.

Mikey, Ive seen them installed with and with out the leather cushion. If you use it you would just have to use longer 1/4 bolts to attach it.
