Tail Wheel Suspension Shocks

Everything is working as I had hoped. Ordered materials to build four sets. Bobby is going to set some of the guys up with them and hopefully get some feedback.

I was looking to built something similar to the JustAircraft SuperStol. But your invention is adapted to a SuperCub, wich is better for us.

It would be a nice upgrade with my main gear high travel suspension...

Thanks again for sharing your nice work

Very cool. Do you think the wipers and seals will be up to living in the dirt and mud?
If that is a problem, you can attach a bellow at piston clevis base part and cylinder base covering the exposed piston rod.

Dan has decided to start selling the tail shock and I will be handling sales. The first four shocks sold are being shipped out this week so we hope to hear feedback from the customers. I expect great reviews as this is a bulletproof design. I created an ad in the Classifieds so go there for more information on how to buy.

I am really excited to work with Dan on this project as I love to see innovation in these planes that we all love.

Let me know how I can help you save weight and your air frame.

Update:

We have released a new single shock LSA version and a new website that you can order from. http://supercubsnorth.com/

With over a dozen units flying we have many customers who are pleased with the reduction in shock to the tail. Please respond here or PM me your questions at BobbyBreeden46@gmail.com

Thanks for your interest! I look forward to seeing you guys at Sun N Fun, Valdez, and New Holstein.

I have been playing with one for over a month now and really like it. Even with my solid rubber 6" TW it smooths everything out.

Just ordered one. Did you find your AOA changed appreciably?

The first one Dan sent me to test raised the tail over 4". I told Dan it worked great but I didn't like losing AOA. Dan redesigned it and the newer style has more travel and lowered the tail back to within 1" of what the spring height was. It smooths out the back end like BW do for the front end.
The only new parts you will need are 2 shorter bolts that replace the ones that were on both ends of the original leaf spring and a couple extra links on both steering chains

I mostly lurk and this is the first time I've read the thread. I admit my first reaction was that it defied what I consider one of the primary laws of both aviation and things mechanical in general which is:

K.I.S.S.

But in the minute or two it's taken to read the thread I changed my mind to:

NEAT!

I suffer from constant lower back pain and only have to recall yesterdays taxi down the rough runway feeling EVERY little bump to realize that the same forces that act on my spine also act on the poor airplane too......VERY COOL

Thanks,

Jack

Experimental only??

NO its a owner produced part, your IA might buy that
Your interpretation of "owner produced part" is misinformed. Read this starting at page 18. http://www.faa.gov/news/safety_briefing/2002/media/julyaug2002.pdf As nice as this tail wheel assembly appears to be it does not meet the intent of "an owner approved" part. An "owner approved" part must be identical to an approved part in every respect. If not, it is an altered part which means that it must have it's own approval.

Airframes Alaska is now producing a revised version of the T3. The Cub version uses a single coil-over shock that's simple to adjust without tools, at least when it's new and clean. They say the geometry is improved as well. Cool. I pick mine up next week.

Stewart please do a follow up, I've watched the videos and would like to try one. I'll have to get a field approval though and if that's ever going to get done it will be up here. I just bought a Husky and that would be the cats PJ's on it.

I'll take some pics when I pick it up unless somebody else beats me to it. As for approval, why wouldn't this be considered a minor alteration? That's not advice, just a question. (I'm loving the experimental category!)

Major alteration. An alteration not listed in the aircraft, aircraft engine, or propeller specifications—(1) That might appreciably affect weight, balance, structural strength, performance, powerplant operation, flight characteristics, or other qualities affecting airworthiness; or
(2) That is not done according to accepted practices or cannot be done by elementary operations.

Minor Alteration. An alteration other than a major alteration.

Had my T3 installed last week and flew with it on Sunday. Never had a tailwheel feel so responsive, stable and smooth. LSA model with 3200

Any problems with shimmy on pavement at gross weight and strong crosswind etc? My IA said he'd sign it off as a minor.

My tailwheel was beginning to shimmy which is why I made the switch to the T3. Although I have only a handful of take-offs and landings since installation I did challenge it running it up and down the runway at different speeds lifting and setting it back down. I played with in on grass and pavement until I began feeling guilty keeping my BW on the pavement that long. No hint of a shimmy, excellent direction control and smooth.

Left for Maine Friday morning, I was heavy with wife in back seat and 60lb in baggage. Landed on sand, pavement and rocks. T3 smooths everything out even with my little solid 6" TW.

Now if it would just float

Those of you that have a bit more time on your T3 what are your thoughts on where to set the dampening? I guess the gear does two things (would have said three things but now we know it doesn't float) There is the landing which really is pretty much main gear then there is taxi which is where I really notice the improvement with the T3. Should I sent it up with almost no dampening in boing boing mode so it can suck up the highs and lows or should I dampen the rebound so it sucks up the impact but then takes a second or so to rebound (extend)?

By the way my T3 is on my Glastar Sportsman with nominal 200# of tail wheel weight, has been a bit of a slog to make the adapter to bolt the T3 to the tailcone but has turned out nice and an unbelievable improvement over the stock leaf spring

To be clear it is not a SuperCub :-)
empty weight is 1418# wheels and 1614# straight floats
gross weight is 2350# wheels and 2500# floats
empty weight tailwheel is 137.5#
the ~200# was actually just a guess on my part of what a loaded tailwheel weight would be

But my Sportsman is not normal, when I built it I purposefully shifted some weight aft for more balanced trim conditions.

That said you supercub folks have been my guiding light during the build, my Borer prop and O360 where pretty much stolen from a supercub, I have "cub" style main gear, obviously it flies a bit differently but my goal was to have it be as close to a supercub as I could get it.
