Supercubs to Alaska for the 2012 Iditarod

Good to hear that everything is working out for all. I just read the entire post. HOly crap, you guys got a good story all ready going!! Ther's always next time Jerry! Maybe I'll see your crew up around MCG or RBY. Cooled off here, should make for a good trail. SF to those in the air.

JK

jk, when you headed that way? It would be fun to fly out there and see the guys in McGrath. I am off work this next week. I need to put some time on the Torch.

Jim,

I will have to call you Tuesday. I am on Alaska Airlines all day tomorrow.

On the trail

I just communicated with the group. They camped SE of Skwenta on the river. I am not sure of their next destination. I know the plan, but they may change it!

My wife and I looked at all of the start pictures of the race on line. I sure wish I was with the group.

Bt the way, SJ was timely with the hat! If you are wondering, it did not arrive in a bucket of snow. It was, however, in a white package. I asked SJ if it was premature, since I only "Flopped" and did not "Flip" :-)

I will wear it none the less, at the next gathering I attend with SC.org.

I will continue to post when I hear from the Cubs on the trail.

Any chance they're going to re-activate the spot? It would be great to be able to follow their trip.

Looks like a good west coast snow/blow is heading your way....for those who are on the Iditarod trail. Might want to wright off Mon afternoon through Tuesday. Park them with the mesh/spoilers covers on.....

Further down the trail

Heard from the guys again today. They went by Rainy Pass and are trough the Mts. Said they were going to hole up at a frozen lake somewhere west and wait for the WX to clear.

I suspect that they may be IMC in cigar smoke in a tent. :-)

Help!

We just received an immediat request medical help message from one of our cubs!

62.57584 latitude, -153.66837 longitude

That shows at the north end of Submarine Lake. Other side of Mountains-

Several miles west of Tin Creek Airport.

Rescue Coordination as been alerted in Anchorage.

Any Alaskan help appreciated!

Jerry

does spot work at this latitude. we had to switch to the Iridium satellite system for good coverage from approx 58 deg.

Wow hope everything is ok. Im stuck in Los Anchorage and still on wheels so not much help. If the big boys are in the air then all I would be is in the way.

I hope all is ok with them. We found out that if you try to put the lat and longs from spot into google earth they will not work. They have a different format from each other. We had a Search & Rescue last weekend where someone hit the help button and when we got the coordinates and plugged them into google earth they were way off.

62.57584 -153.66837 format in maps.google.com maps worked... or you just mean was far of location?

That is almost on top of the trail, and Karen Ramstead is just about to that location. She's on the middle of Steele Lake just to the south east of there about a mile away.

I got it to work on google maps also. Looks like they are right on the trail were it crosses the lake.

The people we found were right where the spot locator said they were if you looked from the spot web page. But if we plugged them into google earth they were way off. So we had multiple people try put them in their computers and see what they got and all of them came up with a spot other than where they were found. If we logged into person's spot account then it showed us same coordinates and came up with different location if we put them into google earth.

Great News!!!!!

AK troopers got to them first by helicopter out of McGrath.

It appears that it was a false message from one of the new Spot Communicators. The Leader's no less. He contacted his wife on the SAT phone after talking with the Troopers. The AK Air Guard mission got the word and turned around about 25 minutes out of their location.

His wife was not happy in her relay of the message to me. This is an experienced pilot's wife and a professional "A" type woman. She knows the appropriate language to use when she is unhappy with her pilot husband. I just had to move the telephone away from my ear and listen to her describe the unpleasantness she and I had been through for the past three hours.

Both his wife and I were in contact with Air Rescue controllers in Anchorage.

I am still waiting for my SAT call to hear all about this. I suspected that this could be the situation, and was silently praying that it was the case, since I had not seen them move since yesterday and his spot message to his wife came from the exact same location.

All of this being said, It is the best outcome.

Three hours of concentrated work and coordination, I hope that it the last.

Glad it all turned out to be a false alarm. Nice to know that the system works and was a very fast response.

More adventure ! Glad everything worked out okay. Found a Utube vidio but don't know how to post it. I think you guys would like it.

What is a false message from a spot locater? Is is when someone accidentally removes the 911 protective cover and pushes the button by accident or did the spot arbitrarily send a distress signal?

Jerry

Don't know yet. It was one of the newer communicator type Spots. The kind that will connect with a smart phone. I still have not been able to talk with the group yet. We know the message was sent and received by his wife, who initiated the rescue response. Not sure if it was an inadvertent button push or a technical problem. I am not familiar with the newer model. We just know that the message was sent and that it was not intentional, as verified by the AK troopers on the scene, and by my friend's SAT call to his wife. It was a prearranged message stored on his Spot.

Thank God no one was injured responding to the false alarm. Crappy wx flying out of Fairbanks today.....

I just wanted to post this info for people to use . Some of you may be aware of it and some not. I found it to be quite accurate to the posts on Spot as Jerry's trip started out. I also used it yesterday to check the Long & Lat that was posted yesterday eve. Here is the link: http://skyvector.com. You can use this for trip planning. Also click on charts and you can go to the sectional you need and put in the cordinates. I thought that it was quite accurate. Jon P.
