GONE WEST
corpus christi, tx
Just getting back online , via hot spot, because we don't have internet service any other way. Had my fuselage in a hanger in Rockport and the hanger is gone! 1/2 wall out of four is standing. There were 2 planes in the hanger besides my fuselage. A C175 is laying on its back about 20 ft from the front of the hanger, the cubby that was in the hanger is about 150yds away, in the middle of the field, rolled up in a little ball. The cubby that was in a connected hanger, directly behind my fuse, was on floats and is completely destroyed. As we drove up I didn't see any signs of our hanger , but as I got closer I could see the steel beams, but only 1/2 of a wall remained. My fuselage had sheet metal from the walls wrapped around the side and all around the tail section. After pealing all of the metal back, we could drag the fuse free. It sustained light damage to the bird cage and some damage to the covering , but was in amazing shape when everything is considered. There are probably 25 airplanes, and a privately owned Huey helicopter destroyed. Hangers are torn apart and one row of hangers, (16 I believe), were laying flat on top of all of the planes inside of them. Another Super Cub that was blown free of the hangers, was destroyed, with only the FWF intact. The field was hit direct from a cat4 hurricane, with 135mph sustained winds and gust to 160mph. The town and several others are devastated. We hauled my fuse back to Corpus Christi where I will fix the bird cage and strip the covering and start covering it again. I just had finished the covering through the brush coats of Eko-fil. At a later time I will try to post pics. This SUCKS! Lost my 170 last year and now this, very depressing. Luckily our house in Corpus Christi was spared any real damage, but clean up begins. Jon

Jon,

So glad YOU are safe and could find salvage your fuselage. I have 4 work projects in the Houston region that I have to come assess for the owners in the next week or so...

Jon, so sorry to hear of the damage to your plane. Looks as though it could have far worse from your pictures.

Hang in there.

If Aviat can name their Husky "Tougher than a Tornado", you should name your Cub "Tougher than a Hurricane". Bummer about all the damage. I visited two airports in TX and KS last weekend that had both been hit by tornados. Both looked similar to your mess. Just a bit more localized.

Very sorry for your loss and all the destruction. Hope my question doesn't seem tacky, but did you happen to notice whether the shrimp farm about 4 miles southwest of the the Rockport airport survived? If those inflated buildings made it, that says a lot. I was told they could be deflated for such an event.CopanoShrimp.webp

Sorry Marty but I didn't see if the buildings were there or not. next time I go over I will try to see. Hopefully they are, but they would have taken a direct hit with winds gusting to around 160mph. Keep your fingers crossed and I will try to check. Jon

Interesting, learned something new today before breakfast. http://globalbluetechnologies.com/ Hope that they didn't get too much damage.

tough deal down there. Sorry for your setback.

Just being able to continue normal life each day is a blessing; the rest is fluff.

Glad the people are safe.

Thanks Jon, I talked to a friend that found out it was blown away. They will rebuild with some updated ideas. Quite a few of the people involved are from up near me and those inflated structures are going to be manufactured at a new facility 15 miles west of me.
