Rebuilding Flight of Passage - N4971H

Chris, it looks great, a lot different that the last time I saw it in the back of that truck

Looking really good Chris and Charlie!

Thanks too, for the long review regarding Keystone. A person begins to wonder if they will ever see their stuff again. Glad it eventually worked out.

You and Charlie are doing a terrific job restoring this historic airplane - thanks for sharing your progress!

Anne.

Looking really good Chris and Charlie!
What did you use for your finish coat I like the shine.

Is that green grass? Forgot what it looks like. Cub looks super Chris, pass out the cigars

Jim

Looks great Chris and Charlie, I hope the nice paint doesn't make it a hanger queen. Fly it up here to the northeast so we can fly with you and Russle because he will need someone to hold his hand to go anywhere south of his comfort zone.

Chris,
You and Charlie do GREAT work! Can't wait to see this historic Cub flying!! Thanks for posting your progress

Urgent. Looking for a good aluminum welder in Chattanooga or north Georgia area. My nose bowl another item may need touching up. We have a good tig machine but just not enough experience to work on these expensive items.

April and I are finally moved into our rental home in Chattanooga. The Saint Louis house is sold. There are still several boxes laying around but we are living well and I can now focus back attention on 71H.

Fairings and interior work mostly complete

My trip is happening next month. It is coming down to the wire. Charlie is ferociously working on the interior as well as firewall forward. It looks fabulous. I feel terrible that he is now working under pressure. I wish I'd of been able to help him. I've only been down one day, and mostly we just ordered parts. Moving to Chattanooga is complete but has swallowed up all my free time.

Can't be much more left to paint.

We've run into a stumbling block. The nose bowl has a small crack that needs welding. We have found a welder willing to help but he is some distance away. Both his and our schedules have not been able to connect. Once we get the nose bowl on, we can mount and fit everything else. Pretty much the cowling is all holding us back.

We also need an adapter for the oil pressure line. Apparently my C90 didn't have that. It is back ordered from Spruce but should be shipped on the 20[SUP]th[/SUP]. If anyone has an extra or one to borrow, that might be a nice backup should there be more of a delay.

Baffles.jpgDoor and sliding windows.jpg
Baffles painted and windows installed.

I also need to start focusing on getting some video and audio for our trip out west. Steve Johnson and I have been talking about this and he will be helping.

Last Monday, Charlie flew up his super 17 loaded with some aluminum to be welded. Through a contact on this very site, we found a welder who came recommended to work on parts. Unfortunately he was a ways away so the best way was via airplane. We showed up and a bit early but people came to work after a while. We dropped off the items and went to the local diner for brunch. By the time we got back he was nearly done with a fantastic welding job. I paid him but a discounted rate. I tried to pay in full but he insisted on an airplane ride instead. “No problem”, I said. We then kind of wasted the rest of the day wandering around. I also went for a ride in my old J-3, which was a nice break.

Where else would you find a great welder in TN?

On Tuesday drove down to Charlie's working on the plane. He had already gotten the exhaust hooked up and all the hoses run. We went through some items that we would need to get done.

Admiring Charlies interior work

I had to pull out the left side trim to re-run the airspeed line. That took several hours in itself. I tried for at least an hour to re-install the cover over the line till I realized I was putting it on upside down. I was rather frustrated that I'd wasted that much time

I stayed the evening and we were back to work in the morning. I put the felt on the straps for the fuel tank. I had bought a felt kit but had run out of felt because I still needed a sleeve for the tube through the fuel tank. I would have to wait until more arrived from Spruce.

Cowling work. Initial fit looks great

We also worked on the cowling for the engine. I had made the initial shapes and curves but everything was still rough cuts. He trimmed all to size installed the latches and cowl bumps. I had to give up on trying to get the cowl without bumps. It was causing too any problems and we were up against a deadline.

Saturday April joined me and we did some work on the fuel system. Charlie had already installed the felt and the We installed the primer lines and had to troubleshoot some leaks. We had almost all of them solved until the gascolator hookup through the firewall started leaking. Well we troubleshot it for hours and finally settled that there must be a crack or the threads are worn out. I placed and or for Steve's gascolator that evening. That aggravated me too because I'd been told to replace it but I insisted it would work fine. I wasted a bunch of mine and other people's time. Hopefully it arrives this week.

Running and testing the primer lines.

Saturday was also photo day. April's new job with a non-profit in Chattanooga. Since her condition of employment included the time off for this trip, they have decided to promote the trip as well. We will also be doing the Flight of Passage for childhood cancer. No problem. The more people that know about it the better. Not sure when or where but they'll be doing press releases and taking donations on a soon to be announced web page.

Looks like an airplane. Lenny testing out his area. Looks pretty comfy. Probably not as happy if someone is in the back with the seat upright.

Charlie hopes to finish paining the cowls this week. If the gascolator comes in, we can start the taxi tests and breaking in the engine.

Really looks incredible, Chris. I'm sure you already know this, but don't forget to put the cowl supports in or you'll be repairing that nice (and very expensive) nosebowl sooner than you would like. I think they were left off of mine at the last rebuild. They are definitely required if you want to keep the cowl parts from self-destructing. I imagine the same parts are used on the PA-18-95 and PA-11.

Last Friday I got home early so I could head down to Charlie's Place. He had already installed the rapidly shipped gascolator and cowling which looked fantastic. I wanted to do some other work but Charlie had insisted that we start the C90 up. Very hesitant as always I tried my best to pull it through a million times and get a little oil flowing. After that we primed, pulled through, and started as normal. I hesitated for a second and then started purring like a kitten.

There is an odd edit where the wife accidentally stopped recording after the initial start.

After lunch we came back and we started it again, running it up to the higher numbers as the break in procedures request. I took the opportunity to taxi it around, checking all the ground handling characteristics. Everything checked just fine.

After the engine runs we started trying to finish up all the small items, oh like putting the correct bolts in the struts. Did you know they were special bolts in the bottom of the struts? Like to the tune of $15 bucks per special bolt. After some alignment work, they were cotter pinned in place.

SAM_0060.jpg
April working hard.

We had to take the front seat out for some brake work and that was a bit of a chore. April did well with getting the bolts threaded on and then making 233 short turns of the open ended wrench to tighten them up. After that we put it all back together

On Wednesday I returned with the Donald and we went over how my portable intercom and radio were going to fit where and have the least visual impact. I was changing my mind by the minute but we finally came to agreement.

After that we struggled but got the new engine mount bolts put in. We had to order one smaller size because of the amount of washers on the nut. Not an easy job. We had to take the cowling back off and use a come-along and chain to remove some weight from the mount.

We are struggling with the seat belts currently. I installed the seat belts to the floor mod as well as single over the shoulder mounting plates. The PMAed inertia reels were not quite long enough and the front lap belts did not reach the floor. I spent several days trying to find a local shop to work on the Amsafe belts but they couldn't do it.

SAM_0043.jpg
"Whew" Charlie says. He might just be done with me soon.

I put on a shiny new spinner, which I liked, and Charlie didn't, and called it “mostly” complete. We now just waiting on seat belts, a Piper decal and some field approval paperwork. We are hoping the first flight is next a week from now. Yes I now, cutting it close.

Everyone gets their photo ops.

As a side note, I got two waterbags last week. One from Mike out in Denver and one from my Mother. Based on a couple more address requests I got last week, I might have one or two more on the way. I love it. I'd never actually seen one and was neat to see how they looked. Thanks to everyone for the gifts. I hadn't even had time to think about getting one.

That freakin' waterbag. I'll give you a pass on the four bolts because it has been almost 10 years since you and I went looking for mine somewhere in the garage....

Damn nice looking plane. Smart move on the numbers.

Where did you wind up mounting the intercom? I'm still struggling/procrastinating on that.

i love that paint scheme, and it looks great on your piece of history.

Everything that sticks out like the ELT remote panel, radio, and intercom will be on the upper right wing root. That way when you stick your head in during a show, it ain't all that noticeable.

I also wanted the availablilty to fly from either seat and still reach all the controls.

Folks. Many have been asking but I've been unable to test fly 71H this last week. She is complete and ready to fly, however lacking the most important item that makes these planes fly – paperwork.

I have 4 field approvals sitting at the Atlanta FSDO. I've been praying they come through this week. I called down yesterday several times and have not received any information. I promise I had never intended on starting this approval process so late, nor did I expect it to take so long.

There is a chance 71H will be delayed getting airborne, but we will make it across. Hopefully soon. More information to come. Keep your fingers crossed.

Ok everyone. Got to give a plug to Steve Pierce and Tom Ford. I think we have our paperwork. We will know more tomorrow. So much excitement right now.
