Questions for a new Super Cub rebuilder

Just bought a 1965 Super Cub 150. Its very original and absolutely unmodified. I plan to keep it and fly for pleasure and not planning on challenging the weather or conditions. Question......should I incorporate any mods. Should I keep it stock. Does it add to the value or take away from the value in doing so. I thought of extending the baggage compartment, installing another lift handle, removing the header, installing a lightweight starter and alternator and painting it cub yellow. It does have a scott 3200 and Cleveland Brakes. I may also install a tow hitch, RRfloat fittings (just incase I buy some in the future) and wing lights. Should I consider extending the flaps or take on any other mods. Thanks...........Casey Jones

casey,
Diggler's right on. Safety mods are good. Performance mods are very subjective. That one's a question of needs/wants/budget. I disagree with his color choice though. Red and white is cool if you want to look like everybody else. Yellow's fine, if that's what you like. Just keep it tasteful enough so that it's appealing to others if you have to sell it.

If you add float fittings, it is my understanding that it will not be legal for floats unless you also add the 2000# GW mod. If I'm wrong, somebody please set me straight.

My old '52 PA-18 ran for a number of years on floats at 1750# gross. I don't see too many 2000# cubs around here, but I see lots of cubs on floats.

The 2000# gross weight increase is part of Wipaire's STC for their floats and only applies to Cubs using Wipaire floats or operating on wheels. It does not authorize the gross weight increase to 2000# using other brands of floats.

there are times when one wants to look like everyone else!!!!!

S2D - I was just going to say the same thing! :D

Red and white + small numbers over the horizontal stab a must. 8)

Casey - You'll appreciate the extended baggage as Dig suggests (I was able to throw my golf clubs in the Cub easily - hey, there's no moose around here anymore and bears don't go for the smell of DEET and a sweaty golf glove - saves the fabric), if you're welding anyway might as well put on the float fittings and extra handle. Plus the tail brace and cabin X brace (HD extended 3 inch gear if you've a mind to). HD lift struts are nice but as someone else said, performance mods are subjective and will dovetail to what you plan to use it for.

Keep it light!

Brad

(Cubs on straight floats don't need a GWI - plan on using amphibs? then yes)
