Recent posts and a request from several members to bring politics back into the main forums of SuperCub.Org has had me taking a historical look about how we ended up with the policies we have today. This also brought to light the fallout we are still living with from a time when SuperCub.Org was a little more like the Wild West than a community of folks with mutual respect for each other.

Although SuperCub.Org is not a democracy, I have always felt it was my duty (and in everyone’s best interest) to try to understand and implement the wants and wishes of the membership to the best of my ability. Because of that I take every request or challenge from supporting members very seriously. In the past we have polled the membership regarding politics in the forums and the response from those who have invested in this community has been nearly unanimous that discussing politics is not why they come here – and further that it would keep them from coming here. “I see it and hear it everywhere, everyday, I don’t want to see it and hear it here too”, is a pretty good summary of the responses.

However, it’s not just that. I mentioned fallout above. I still hear people say frequently they do not post because they are afraid they will be attacked. Many people read the site for years before they feel comfortable making a post. Worse, is that time has not yet healed the notion by many that SuperCub.Org is a bunch of arrogant a-holes who will run you out on a rail if you don’t agree with them.

I think we have come a long way from those days, but the image is still there and I hear it way too often. I certainly don’t want to do anything that might be a step backwards in this regard. When someone does a Google search for Super Cub (we are usually #1 on the search ranking) I don’t think the first thing they want to read about is people beating each other up about politics, or they would have gone somewhere else.

The problem with discussions of politics, religion, etc, is that even amongst the closest of friends with whom we agree, there is always a point where things deteriorate. In my experience here, very rarely if ever has then been a political discussion that remained on the proverbial high road for more than about ten posts. We are simply unable to police ourselves and contain our vehemence when it comes to these topics, which are very emotional for some people.

For me, it also underlines something I have observed over the last few years; that the American conversation has become one of “us and them”, rather than one about “us”. It is in the interest of the politicians to divide us so we can be easily counted. The news, no matter which source or slant, is only feeding this trend to further find ways to separate us into “flocks”. It is in this way that we are becoming more like sheep – white sheep in one pen, gray sheep in another, etc. The various parties each claim to be the champions of the middle class, free spirits, and the American dream, yet they all insist on categorizing and pigeonholing us with their “platform”.

While the above may seem (and may be!) a bit of a digression, I hoped it might shed a little light on why I want SuperCub.Org to be a community that is beyond that kind of small and divisive thinking.

I greatly appreciate the many supportive PM’s and emails, and posts. However, I also appreciate being challenged and I appreciate different ideas and opinions – even if they are sometimes hard to hear. Challenging long standing traditions like this one is important here – as it is everywhere else in life.

I have been complimented by many forum operators and webmasters about how well this forum is run. My response is always the same; “When you get really great people together like we have who take ownership in the community, it pretty much runs itself”, and that is exactly how I feel.

Thank you all

P.S. It will not be the first time I have to move my own post to Rant and Rave, I suppose it is inevitable...

If people want to talk politics here, they sign up for "Rants and Raves". I think the lack of posts there shows us something. ;)

Thank you, Steve! Supercubs are why I came here originally, politics is why I left, friends are why I returned.

Anne.

Rants & Raves is truly a good idea. Moving things some might find offensive behind a gate with a warning sign is far better than censoring speech. I suggested the idea to other forums, and at least one adopted it.

What do you mean SC.Org is not a democracy are you telling me you are the first Tyrannical Libertarian Dictator

There is only one other subject that is as filled with bias and uselessness as politics and that's religion, and its best to keep away from both subjects.

That was a great post SJ! I have been one of those that have not asked some questions, because I felt I would be pounced on for asking for an opinion on a competitor's product (Husky, Top Cup, Scout, etc.) in comparison to the SC when I was in the market for one. So, I went elsewhere with the question and was treated differently. I really appreciate your opinion and point of view on this matter.

I too feel like I'm attacked every time I post, and I'm just an innocent bystander.

Oh my goodness, Steve Eaton, you are such a gentle, kind soul...why I can't see why anyone would wish to attack such a sensitive, pure person like you.

Now for your alter ego, the notorious SteveE, the pirate who has been known to remark to certain female types, as they exit a supercub, that when someone tells them to "haul ass" that she needs to make "two loads"...the tyrant who has been known to put rubber snakes into the tents of some poor unsuspecting young woman at OK18...the list goes on and on...NOW THAT person probably has just cause for feeling as though there is a big target on his chest...

14 posts and still here...

Great post SJ. Sometimes we just need reminded that you are thinking for the best of all, and it is not all about BigE!;-)

Where dissent no longer is valued, polarization weakens a country and makes it safer for fools. I like differing opinions as a measure of my biases. I consider extreme views without evidence to support them as endearing but old-fashioned, particularly when they work against the interests of those espousing them.

That's just me. Since respectful conversation on any subject seems at a premium in the US, SJ has done the right thing. Walls go up where there's little tolerance for other views, right or wrong. Rudeness and ridicule should have no place on any board. They should be sent to their R&R room!

The rant and rave section is a great idea.

It would be nice to see the titles show up on the front page, though.

Tim

Tim,

The problem is sometimes it is just the title that needs to be sent to rant and rave. Anyone subscribed to rant and rave will get the latest chatter in "whats new" You can also subscribe to a forum itself so that any post that is made sends you a message.

When a person sings up for supercub.org they receive both a pm and an email that talks about rant and rave and how to subscribe, its no secret!

Currently there are around 625 members of R&R.

I think your R&R policy is great. Want to argue politics, go there. Don't want to argue politics, don't go there. Only problem I have is the reason you send some perfectly good threads to R&R. Because of one word by one poster a thread gets sent to R&R even when it is overlooked and no one even comments on it. Maybe once in awhile you should ask the poster to remove their comment before you send the whole threadi to R&R.
Would you leave the thread about Excelsior Springs Airport alone if someone slipped in a politically incorrect word or would you send it directly to R&R without any comment? Hopefully you would keep a constructive thread where it belongs and ask the poster to remove their comment.

Brian,

I have sent out about 10,000 requests for folks to "dial things back" and most of the time folks are happy to help out by amending their post. However, there are some folks who I know are just going to get more wound up if I ask them - not many, but a few.

I have also split threads that are part good and part brawl and sent part of it to R&R, but frankly, that does not happen too often as they are usually one or the other.

Excellent post SJ!!!!! SteveE and "innocent" all in the same sentence...................hummmmmmmmmm............I'll have to think about that for a while:-)

Steve

Great thoughts, SJ. Full agreement here. R&R is an excellent place for a consenting encounter of the political kind for those who desire and, indeed, thrive on such things. Even there I like to think that many of the combatants really are friends first and politicos second and that there, like here on the main forum, we drop everything to help when one of our SC.org members needs assistance. That's what makes this merry band of flying friends the best community out there.

I think the way SJ does it works fine. I have made a few comments after happy hour that were off the cuff and got greeted by a SJ email in the AM and was happy to rethink my answer. I've been spanked a few times on the J3 site and it just gets moved without a notice and it tends to get my Irish up a little :oops:

I get soooooooo sick of getting my posts sent back to me to dial things back. I am pretty sure SJ has a special hot key shortcut to which his fickle finger aims the moment WindOnHisNose comes across his screen. Rejected. That's how I feel. Rejected.

S2D, just try putting a post up that has my handle in it and see how blasted fast it goes to R & R.

Randy,

possible you get confused and think you are on the Hell's Angles site instead of here?

;-):wink:8)

You know, if Mr. E would get back to his quips, I could let some go....;-)
