Pilot Seat Help Needed

I recently pulled the old foam out of my seat and I was surprised to find that it was a sling style seat. I guess that is my first question - is that typical?

Secondly, what do I need for foam? I went with Spruce’s medium foam but I am worse off than where I started with the old degraded foam. Should I put in a spring? Fabric seat frame then foam?

Opinions and your personal preferences needed. Want to be able to fly all day and not have a sore a$$!

https://www.supercub.org/forum/threads/oregon-aero-seat-cushion-sliced-open.32537/ This is a good post on how to make a comfortable seat. I did it in my pacer and it went from a 2-3 hour tolerance to a 8 hr day of flying with no problems. Cut out spots for pelvic bones or use a pink layer. I don't remember if I did just a layer of pink or cut outs on my cub but I just did 24 hours of flying in 4 days with no issues. The pink will conform quicker once you warm it up 10-20 min even at -10 degrees outside. I think the key is lumbar support also. As far as seat cover I am running a aluminum cover so I have access to battery. I have seen fabric glued over the seat, or ratchet strap material riveted on. I have never been happy with a spring seat base.

What are you calling a sling seat? Piper used seat springs, those get removed for a metal cover when the under seat battery is installed. I have glued heavy weight fabric to the seat frame and shrunk. I bought Temper Foam for my 182 seats, glued fabric on the seat frames and had a friend set up new upholstery.

I used heavy aircraft fabric on my 11 seat back and bottom, then Oregon Aero cushions. Their stuff is REALLY expensive now. The Sport seats may be good as well. But a sling…..not even!

It is an actual web sling, and to make it worse the material is stretchy. I’ll get a picture of it before I rip it out.
