PA18 Gear on a 12

I've got a question that probably would be easily answered with a call to whoever I order 18 gear from. I am fixing my PA12 with damaged PA12 gear and am considering putting cub gear on. I think I've read about every post on why I would want to do that but am having a hard time searching and finding anything about the difficulty of putting on PA18 gear and how hard to weld the new tabs on. I'm assuming it's an STC or is it a field approval? Are there instructions in the paperwork on where to weld the tabs? If I paid someone to do everything about how much does a job like this cost or about how many hours? Where is the best place to order the gear and do they send a kit with all the weld on parts?
Thanks,
Tom

Crosswinds STOL in Wasilla, Charly Center. (907) 376-8069. Their website appears to be down at the moment - -

The install is by STC. I also used Crosswinds. Borer is another option. Then you get to decide on gear. Std, HD, and extended HD, either 3" or 6". Atlee's has the STC for 3" extended gear on a -12 and Ron Sullivan has the 6" extended STC. Atlee produces the 6" gear to order once you have the STC in hand. All will need PA-12 specific shock struts and cabane. Atlee's has those. Then you'll need to come up with some hydrosorbs on your own since none of the gear suppliers sell those. Atlee's also has safety cables with STC for -12s on -18 gear. And don't overlook Atlee's long step, also an STCd product.

When you weld the tabs on for the cabane, you should already have the cabane in hand and use it to locate the tabs. Pretty much guarantees the fit. The hydrasorbs are available from Univair. $$$$$$$ get them with the bungees installed. I used Atlee's STC SA4616NM for the cabane, and Crosswinds SA669AL for the 18 gear. Why use one when two will do.

Cheers

Thanks, for the advise. I ordered the parts (3 inch extended) from Atlee Dodge and using the crosswinds STC. Atlee doesn't have an STC for the gear just for the shock strut, long step, and cabane v. I learned that you use the same attach fittings as the 12 gear you only have to weld on the cabane v ears. Hydrasorbs I ordered from Stoddards since the bungees are already on and the right size. After talking with everyone this seemed like a good route so I figured I'd let you guys know what I did in case someone else gets into a similar situation and searches this topic. This site is great for the guy (me) who doesn't have a super cub guy next door to talk to.
