Maybe this ha been discussed once upon the time......but I did not find any answer to my question:
Has anybody any experience with PA-20/-22 balanced Tail feathers on PA-12/-18? I'm not asking if it is legal or not, but like to know if that works! 10" smaller elevator !
Thanks all

I've heard of guys wanting to put -18 feathers on a Pacer, but not the other way around. What's the goal of this mod?

People were putting the pa-20 tailfeathers on j-5s and 12s by 337s for years. The stcs for the 150hp upgrades required pa-18 tailfeathers.

Never seen any paperwork for it. Only found one case of PA-20 tailfeathers on a J-3.

aren't the j 3 pa 11.12 and small engine supercubs the same size tail feathers as the 22 or 20 except the 22 and 20,s are balanced? you dont get the bigger tail feathers on supercubs till you get not real sure which engine but anyway the "bigger" engine supercubs have the bigger tail feathers as the origional question said you have a 10 inch smmaller elevator comparing a PA 12 to a PA22 but I think they are exactly the same size just that the PA 12 isnt balanced

The Pacer horizontal configuration is dimensionally the same as the PA-12, with the exception of the Pacer feathers being balanced. That provides more movable surface and less control stick force. -SB

Tailfeathers

Thanks all you for you hints.
That fact is, that on the PA-12 I am restoring are the original PA-12 tail feathers, unbalanced and the O-320 1A1. Since I have a set of PA-20/-22 feathers to put on I would like to have some comments on experience with this combination. I figured out, that both have same area, the J3 and original PA-12 and the balanced PA-20/-22 and when they flew with the O-320 and unbalanced feathers it should work also with the balanced PA-20/-22 feathers. At least, the the distance from the CG to the tail is longer on the PA-12 than on the PA-20/-22 but maybe a little less response on the elevator ????
By the way, I have 3 sets of complete tail J-3/PA-12 to give away for charging only the shipment......

The pa-18 I bought had pacer elevators and stabs on it. I couldn't figure out why I was running out of elevator on landing. With full nose up trim...I couldn't get the tail down in a full stall landing. Replaced them a few months ago....what a difference. Don't know about the -12.

I have run this combination for years. It works just fine. It really is like power steering compared to the non-balanced tail. Just upgrade your trim system to the -18 double pulley. The balanced tail will put enough force to the mechanism make the trim slip. Since you already have them try them out. If you don't like it you can always sell a fresh covered set to the short wing guys.

Put a set of PA22/20 balanced tail feathers on a PA18-95 via field approval. Worked great to cure the heavy elevator issue and feels very well balanced.
