Pa 18 trim

FRIEND
I remember hearing about an stc to swap out the -12 in the super cruiser to pa 18 trim... is this out there and who sells the stc to box the rear longs?

As far as I know there is no STC for the PA-18 trim just a field approval which has been done many times, same with boxing the tail.

No STC for 18 trim in a 12 and difficult to get a field approval because it affects a control surface but all necessary parts are PMAd from Dakota Cub, and the pa18 piper drawings show you how to do it properly. Sometimes it's better to ask for forgiveness not permission.

Does Univair use the overhead double groove trim in their new -12 airframes? May be worth a call to see how they dealt with approval.

I got a field approval for the double groove pulley trim on my PA-16. I’d have no issue doing a similar approval on a PA-12. Guess the level of difficulty depends on who you ask. FAA doesn’t seem to like doing Field Approvals. For DARs that’s part of our business, same for DERs, doing 8110-3 approvals. Difference is you have to pay us for our time, FAA is paid with taxes.

Just received the new trim set up from Dakota yesterday, it's supposed to be a solid replacement and it comes with the stc paperwork. Probably nothing like the 18 but it's got to be better than the sloppy original set up.

rsrguy,
Is your 12 back up and flying yet? If so, what are your thoughts on the Dakota Cub trim setup? I've got a 12 project in the works, and while I never had any issues with the regular trim system, it seems like this would be the time to upgrade it. Sorry for digging up an old thread!

Thanks,
Erik

The airplane is not completed yet. It's a very nice system. We'll be installing a new endless cable on it next week. I'll report back about how smooth the action is once it's on. In any case, should you order it get a new cable from Tony.

I appreciate that, look forward to hearing what you think of it.

dga....Are you a DAR? Can you do the -18 in my -12 trim approval? Please PM me if possible. Thanks, Bill

I have the Dakota jackscrew and puleys. They are excellent and they are STC'd for the -12, however the STC does not cover the modifications that need to happen to the airframe to make them work (additional guide pulley and and tensioner pulley/spring) Brian at DC says there are several folks that have gotten a field approval to install the "system". That's what I am looking for. Hoping someone can help.
