PA-18 Rudder Position Light

I need to order a rudder position light assy for my PA-12 which has an -18 tail. The number of my -14 is Grimes SATC 20 CP15 (it also has an -18 tail. Any ideas on the correct Grimes light part number from Univair? I looked on the drawings and the P/N that is shown dosent cross reference. Any help is appreciated.

Just curious: are you planning to use a conventional light bulb, or will you use an LED? The LEDs seem to have significant advantages (low power consumption, long life) and I suppose you can run a lighter wire to them. They're much more expensive, I know, but maybe the benefits outweigh the cost. I'd be interested in your thoughts.

I used a Whelen A555AV. If your rudder was supplied with the mount you'll need to enlarge the center hole.

I think I will use the conventional light as all the LED lights I have looked at are non PMAd. Stewart- I just welded in the mounting bracket. How much did you have to enlarge the hole? I would like the original part if I can get it.

I think the cross reference for the Whelen is Grimes A2064. I have no idea whether that bulb socket is smaller or not. The current Grimes lights are significantly more expensive than Whelen.

I don't recall how much the hole was enlarged. It was done with a common twist drill. Not a big deal.

Tail Light

I wonder why $257 for the Grimes vs. $96 for the Whelen on AC Spruce? The A555AV14 looks like the right light. Any more thoughts before I pull the trigger on it? Is it gonna fit....?

The Whelen will not fit unless you enlarge the hole. If your rudder is currently covered it will make it a little more difficult. We wound up buying a used grimes 2064 and it worked perfectly. There is a thread with some great pictures of the grimes light that Darrel posted not to long back. I think it was in NOV/Dec.
