OK here is a question from the road.. well sky ways...

When you put floats on a J-3 the gross goes from 1220 to 1300.

On a PA12 it goes from 1750 to 1836.

So does the legal gross on a PA-18 go up as well??? When it is put on top of edo 2000s......

I will check back in for answers on a borrowed computer in a couple of hours.

When the weather clears I have to keep pushing south towards Vegas...

Alex,

Yep, the gross weight of a PA-18 goes from 1750 pounds all the way up to 1760 pounds when it becomes a PA-18S, and is mounted on EDO 2000 floats.

10 stinkin pounds????

I wonder about a PA-18-135? They were only 1500 gross to begin with.

IS there any way that a PA-18AS-135 can have an upgraded gross while still using the 135 engine?

If not, I don't see how you could ever (legally) use one. They are 1100 empty with electrical stuff, plus 200 pounds of fat guy and full tanks and you can't put anyone in back. Or you can have two people just sit there with not fuel.

If you look at the TCDS,ItemII PA18S and PA19S where it talks about the PA18S-135 under Maximum Weight;

1474 lb. with item 209a EDO 89-1400 floats.
1760 with item 209b EDO 89-2000 floats.

This tells me that the 135 jumps to 1760 when on the 2000 floats.

Thats what my manual says. Beware that'sw only for edo2000's. You have to get the STC (basically add two six inch pieces of tube in the tail, and use larger bolts on the landing gear) if you're on any other floats.

GW Increase

I heard that Cub Crafters is working on a 2300 lb gross weight increase for the PA-18. This would really open the door for some neat float options if it applies to all PA-18's and not just their Top Cub. Crash

It allows me to carry more fish.
