PA 18 blank instrument panel source

Oliver

FRIEND
Looking for a blank 9” tall pa-18 panel.
thought Wayne Mackey had them awhile back.
anyone have his contact?
Or other source…?

thanks

If you go with all light weight instruments, get an original panel. If you hang anything heavy in the panel get one from Attlee.

I use to use Clyde's panels and add a double on the back like Piper did on the later Super Cubs. Recently I started using the panel blanks from Univair. Thicker material and the roll over the top like Piper used.

This is a Univair panel compared to a Clyde Smith panel. Univair part number is CSI-1028, 9" tall. The CSI-1025 is 8" tall. Clyde's are .040" 3003 and if I remember correctly Univair are 5052 and I know they are .032".

I have an aluminum template, I scribe and cut and file to fit. Have seriously thought of having a punch made.

My father who is 83 years old is Mr. Pierce, I bet you and I are close to the same age. I am 56. ;)

The rolled top edge with a slight bead is nice. I looked hard to find a die set to roll that edge when I replaced the panel in my 18-95, but ended up having to hand form it.

Aside from the edge, the shop I work for now has a panel pro so I can mill any panel. Not sure it’s faster but it’s nice to layout, cut, coat and engrave.

Hi Steve,
Any pictures of the panel layouts..you have it kind of blocked by the top panel in the pic. What little I can see it looks pretty good with the trigs up top right.
Thanks, I'm looking for ideas that aren't busy.

Great ..thanks Steve. I've never done much metal work so I better order 2 or 3 panels ;-)

The cutouts are the best way of planning your layout. It gives your brain a solid visual picture of the final product. If you do it right, you'll make a few arrangements before you settle on the layout.

Yes use the cutouts and play with them to ensure you have good clearance for everything behind the panel. Unless you plan on having it laser cut, you’ll also need a knockout punch and template from ATS.

Concept to near completion:
