PA-18-95 vs PA-11?

Hi everyone, starting to get more serious about getting a cub, and I'm curious of your thoughts on the PA-18-95 against the PA-11. If you've flown both of them, I'd love to hear your thoughts. I can find quite a bit of discussion on the higher horsepower PA-18 variants, but the 95s seem to be a bit rarer.

Maybe there's no way to wrong with either of them? Both seem to be well-performing machines that are light on fuel.

Even better, if you know any that might be for sale, please toss me a message!

The -18 is usually a little heavier, but they also have a higher gross weight. The -18 doesn't have the overhead soar to bump your head on, but if you out a -18 seat base in a -11, it's not an issue unless you're over 6'1". With a single wing tank, and no electric, they're extremely good performers. If you can find either one at a price you can live with, buy it!

I've had both, 11 is the sweetheart as far as flying harmony. 18 is a little heavier but you get a usable baggage compartment, better adjustable front seat and headroom. I've gone everywhere on the single 17 gallon tank over past 30 years

Getting hard to find a decent -11, and nearly impossible to find a -18 95 that is close to original. Not sure what they're selling for, but it seems like the asking price is nearly double what they were going for 10 years ago.

You might search the site as well, lots of previous discussions on here. Ditto what has been said about both here so far.

The biggest issues in my opinion:

1. The11 has the spars meet right over your head, and forward just a bit. No problem unless you’re taller than about 5 9, or you crash……. The 18-95 has the spars ending at the outer top deck…..MUCH better headroom.

2. The gross weight on the 11 is 1220. That means it qualifies for light sport. Problem is, most 11s weigh around 800 to 900 pounds. If you are about being legal, (and in my opinion you should), don’t plan on carrying a passenger. On the other hand, the PA-18-95 has a GW of 1500. That plane is likely a bit heavier than the 11, but generally able to legally carry a passenger.

3. I believe no 11s were produced with electrical systems. So, hand prop to start. I’ve hand propped a lot of planes and owned a J-3 and a PA-11, so hand propping doesnt scare me. But there is andded risk annd it can be an PITA sometimes. Adding a starter to a 11 likely means changing to a different engine…..and significant added weight. See 2. above.
Many if not most 18-95 have an electrical system and a -12 engine with starter.

If you don’t NEED Light Sport capability, I’d definitely look for a PA-18-95.
