PA-18-90 STC's

Hey Folks,

I've come across some paperwork for a Supercub project I've been wanting to start. The catch is it's for a 90 horse SC and not the 150. Until a friend mentioned it yesterday I hadn't thought about availability of STC's for the PA-18-90. I've been kicking around the idea of building this to the 1949 stock specifications. However... If I decided to go the other route (Widebody, 180hp, Bushwheels, Floats, etc....) I'm curious which STC's apply to the -150 but not the -90. I'm sure there's a bunch of them but I'm wondering if anyone has found any in particular which were a real inconvenience.

As always, any input is appreciated.

I think you would have to look into the details of each STC you want to persue. I may be wrong, but wasn't a PA-18-95 just considered a PA-18? When did they start adding the HP designations? Sounds like you bought the paperwork that was on barnstormers.

The data plate that came on my PA-18 "95" just says: PA-18. If your going for the larger engines . . you'll have to address fuel capacity as per the Piper data sheets and install both tanks like the "95" deluxe had. The basic "95" had only one tank and no electric sys. You'll also have to have the "balanced" elevators" and hydrasorbs. The "95" deluxe came with hydrasorbs but the elevator was like a J-3, Clipper, etc.. And then there's the flap issue. If your thinking of going the "95" route and latter think you'll add more ponies . . . you'll buy/fabricate another boot cowl, different windshield (the "95" windshield is longer and won't fit the larger boot cowl) all new engine cowlings, & mount. And then there's the flap issue. Like they say . . "All it takes is money".

You're right folks. It is just PA-18. I added the -90 in error. I just wanted to differentiate between any PA-18 and the actual early model PA-18. I've been trying to figure out what my options are if I wanted to go with flaps. I don't see an STC for flaps and in talking to Dakota their not sure what route one should take. Running through the list of STC's it seems most everything a guy could want applies to the PA-18 and PA-18 "series".

Has anyone out there added flaps to a PA-18?

Guy in Columbus MT put flaps on this 90 hp cub. I think it was just a log book entry and 337 reference the TC.

Penn Yan 180 STC

So far I think I've only found one hang up. Seems the STC for the Penn Yan 180 conversion is specific to the 1955 and later PA-18-150. Fortunately the CC STC mentions the PA-18.

Still wondering how the change to the Dakota wings will pan out. The STC doesn't mention the PA-18.

flaps

Well, I'm kinda in the same boat your in. I own a 1958 pa-18. It started life with a c-90 also. It has the borer stc'd 150hp conversion. Still no flaps. I've been told, if you have the drawings, you can install the flaps with nothing needed more than a logbook entry. I would also think you would need a 337. My fuselage has all the welded in fittings for pulleys and also my seat has the small bracket for the handle in the cockpit. I ordered the cd from northland and it has a wealth of drawings, but I have no parts as of yet. I currently rebuild wrecked ag-aircraft. Air tractors mostly, but when I get time, probably this winter, I'm going to try to install flaps on my cub, with the help of a couple of older mechanics.
