PA-12 Wing value ?

I’m building up a PA-12 and stumbled across a nice uncut set of wings. They are in great shape minus the tanks. Roughly what are they worth in 2024 prices ? They have ailerons and the hinges and all feel very tight. The wingtips are remarkably straight and not dinged up. I just don’t want to grossly over pay. Thanks.

Couldn't say what a reasonable price would be but for others who may have a better idea, knowing if they have flaps or not will definitely impact the value.

I would think, it depends on whether or not the seller has an asking price in mind. Does the seller really really want to get rid of them or are you pestering him to sell them? Is he an airplane person or not? Not long ago I was told about a modified J-3 in a barn. The owner was deceased and the son wanted to get rid of it. A complete clipped wing airplane with two overhauled engines and no log books. I didn't want it, but offered to help. Rather than me making an offer or suggesting a price, I asked him what he wanted....he said $1000. Well you can imagine how fast it sold. Both he and the buyer were happy.

Another time I was given a Stinson 10A wing....just take it away.

They are for sale. He asked me to throw a number out there.

You have to be able to "read" the seller. What is his demeaner? You: "Well they need to be recovered. I'll give you $1000." Him "Each?" You: "Well I meant for both, but OK." Are they at an airport or in the back of his barn surrounded by stuff? That will give you some clues. At the same time you need to understand how desperate you are to get them, and how badly does he want to sell them? That could cause you to offer too much, more than he would otherwise accept. Start low and feel your way up until you are both happy. Understand how much more you will need to spend to cover them, along with any possible repairs or refurbishing which may need doing. This is a face to face deal where you have to be able to think on your feet.

I asked about them for my build a while back. He called and said he’s gonna list them but I asked first. They are in wing saddles in his hangar. I believe he said he’s going to ask around $7k for them.

Personally, I think that's high for a set of 77 year old wings without gas tanks and tank covers, even if you can just bolt them on and go flying. I would wonder where and what happened to the rest of the airplane? Wings are seldom suddenly available without a back story.

Remember that even a good looking set of wings will still need a lot of work. All the steel parts needs to come off and be bead blasted primed and painted or powdercoated. You should also replace the tip bows just due to age and look for dents on the leading edges. I’m not positive but I bet new ones are 10k each shipped. But, that is brand new with the flap STC done. Big difference. Without pictures, I’d start at 5k for the set.

Remember used means work to restore.

The wings' value is going to depend on what you plan to do with them. If you are going to add flaps, larger fuel tanks, extended wing tips, etc., you might be better off investing in new wings that already have the modifications you want. There is nothing easy about doing those modifications to a PA12 wing.

If you intend to bolt them on your 12 just as they are now, it may be worth the $7,000 investment.

There are multiple sources for new wings.

If I remember correctly you are trying to build a experimental STOL PA 12. Stock 12 wings are far from what you will want in the STOL world. For STOL work you will want to include Keller style flaps/squared tip/aileron to the tip/leading edge mods, or something of that nature. So basically like KJC said it will be a complete wing rebuild. Leave that stock stuff to someone that wants a simple stock 12. Call Javron and see what a wing package built to what you want costs. Once you try to take out all the little screws holding in the ribs you will understand how new is worth the money.
