Thanks for remembering George Pappas. We spread his ashes 3 days ago where we spread his wife Ruby from the same Cub I bought up to Alaska for him in 1980's and now own.
To the list:
Oren Hudson owned a widgeon on Merrill Field next to George's
Ken Okonek, Doug Geeting, Don Deering- I had time in the back of these Part 135 Cub operators counting moose for ADFG
Vern Lofstead Helicopter pilot used when collaring brown bears on Kodiak for ADFG
When I worked in Kodiak, we used Vern, Craig and their Dad, Bud for bear capture. All very skilled helicopter pilots, and a lot of fun to be around. Bud had a great story about getting the call from his wife while working on his rotary wing rating in South Dakota. Seems the oil company let her know they’d be in Kenai in three days to inspect the helicopter they’d leased.
Bud got it there in time, but the rating may have been put off a while.
What years were you at Anchorage Helicopter? I worked there some when I was still in High School, running parts.. and picking up the beer on Friday nights even though I was like 16… Tony Cestnik was around when I was there..

Knew Oren pretty well. Flew with him in his Bonanza (think he had over 16,000 hours on that one alone) many times when he was with Spernak Airways. And flew to Widgeon flyins with him too.
One of the great pilots and truly nice guy. He and George Pappas were both great guys. Nice his ashes with Ruby in the same place! Perfect send off.

My folks knew Red Dodge from when they lived in ANC. I recall getting to go up front and sit left for a few minutes in either a PNA DC-3 or Connie that Red was captain on that day. Funny the things that etch into the memory of a 4yr old.
Orin Seybert was another AK legend and an all-around great guy. When Marty Anzellini and I were building my -12, Marty had to hand me off to Mike Skup to finish so he could secretly rebuild Orin’s original Taylorcraft that he started Penair with. And by rebuild? Ground up including building a jig for the airframe. Orin’s son gave the plane to his Dad as a birthday gift. Great family.
A lot of us were hanging around Merrill Field in the 70’s and 80’s.. No doubt we at least passed each other on the road or heard each other on the frequency..
