Oil filter on C 90-8

Hi,
I am in the process of, with my AI, overhauling a C90-8. I plan to put it on my 46 J3C/65. I need advice on oil filters. Have read most of the posts and am still confused. First, is it worth while to put a filter on and second is there an approved installation for a J3 with a C90-8. Most of the bolt on adapters are for the -12 series. I am not too crazy about doing a firewall mount but I can see an advantage. I have heard that oil temps on the 90 can be a problem so the remote mounted filter wold give some help there I suppose. Just interested in any input or thoughts anyone might have on this dilemma.

You won't have any oil temp problems with the J-3. Plenty of cooling.

Firewall mount and the one that replaces your oil screen are your only options.

Be careful with the mounting location if you use a firewall type- I have seen several small continentals develop oil pumps that loose their prime immediately after this installation. I think that some locations it forces the oil out of the pump.

If you lose prime, pull the oil bypass cap, squirt some oil in, replace the cap and start within a couple of minutes. It will regain prime, and the whole process only takes 4 or 5 minutes.

I'm not a big fan of the filters, as we have seen reduced oil pressure and pressure fluctuations when using them. Also, small Continentals have run millions of satisfactory hours depending only upon the screen.

I've had airwolf filters on both the J-3 and my PA-11. Never a problem. Mounting the airwolf on the firewall of the PA-11 was difficult, though. :P

To reprime a small Continental simply pick up the tail and tip the nose way down low for about a minute. Works like a charm. Once in a while the engine will need to be reprimed after the airplane hasn't flown in awhile.

Holding the nose down is well worth trying first, but doesn't always work. Recently removed an 85-12F that wouldn't prime that way. It would prime with the remove bypass cap and squirt oil technique.
