HELP ANYONE! While my Supercub is being recovered (2 months has turned into 7 :bad-words: ), I've been using my Husky to tow banners and need to get the oil temp down on it. Know anybody whose put on an extra oil cooler (mounted inside the cowling or on the landing gear)? looking for a 337 or better yet an STC. Trying to do this ASAP, any suggestions? Thanks!

Does you Husky have the cooling lip mod that Aviat sells? I would start there. Might see if you could install a larger cooler in the stock location. Not much room back there.

Steve, yea, I've got that lip on but the larger cooler might be something to think about, thanks for the reply.

I have some friends with a 180 Supercub, converted with the Dave Johnson/Mike Jensen STC circa 1970, with the original 150 oil cooler location in the nosebowl. They're looking to relocate the oil cooler to aft baffle, as Penn Yann did when they picked up that STC.

Does anybody know of paperwork to do something like that without buying the whole STC again? Which cooler would you use?

I thought there was a string on that topic, but have been unable to locate.

Thanks for your help. Cubscout

I put a "Pacific Oil Cooler Service" unit on back in August, and it made a huge difference.

Its down for a rebuild now, so I do not know how cool it will run I the winter months

The cooler is well built, and much lighter than stock.

Oil Coolers

I urge everyone to stay away from anything with a Pacific Oil Cooler service or Aero Classics Inc. data plate attached. Anything produced from this company after August of 2003 is suspect. The original company AERO-Classics Ltd. was awarded the PMA to produce oil coolers for the Super Cub and many other general aviation airplanes but went out of business 8/19/2003. Pacific Cooler bought the remnents of the company and is capitalizing on the name. I have proof they have falsified much of the data submitted to the FAA, have been investigated, had their hands slapped by the FAA and other goverment agencies...it's only a matter of time before they're discovered. In the meantime I would stay with Niagara, Stewart-Warner or even Positech. Niagara maintains the Corrosion protection process on the aluminum replacement oil cooler.
If using an oil cooler built by Aero Classics please check it for signs of corrosion inside the air fin surfaces, unlike Niagara, Aero chooses to hide their lack of corrosion protection with a layer of black paint, however this will not protect the cooler against salt water spray.

Dr. Cool: I just got back a Niagra #20006A which has been flushed, retested, and yellow-tagged for return to service by Pacific. Any word on quality of Pacific's service work?

Thanks. Cubscout

I put a new Pacific cooler on my own Cub a few months ago. It is not painted black, but is gold anodized aluminum, (even between the fins from what I can see). Only a little more than 100 hours on it so far, but it works great, not that is has been warm enough to really test it yet, and is a lot lighter than the old steel slug it replaced. It appears well made, or I would not have installed it....Is there anything to watch for other than corrosion? If this legal battle creates a AD on my perfectly good cooler I'm really going to be pissed off.

You folks may recall my problems getting Southwest Oil Coolers to stand behind (pay up) for a faulty oil cooler that resulted in the need to tear down my engine last May. I would not recommend them at all.
