I just bought a SBS-J-16 battery from Aircraft Spruce to use in my L-21A. Even though many have said it is PMA'd, and the Spruce website says it is, according to the STC and PMA datasheet that came with the battery, it is not. It is listed by part number as installed under STC SA02138AK which is Dan's under seat battery STC. It also is listed in Atlee's under seat battery STC, but that installation is not mentioned in the Odyssey paperwork.
The PMA list does not include that battery part number, or any battery eligible for a Piper product. So the battery itself is not PMA'd, nor is it STC'd.
I just looked at AC 23-27 and the battery comments specifically require battery weights to be the same, +/- 1 lb.
It looks to me like it's time to by one of the two STC's and either put it under the seat, or modify the installation to put it in the stock position. Otherwise I can try the field approval route.
Is there something I'm missing?
