Moose on the gravel bar

I got back from a SE Alaska fishing trip yesterday and had to take the Cub out for a short hop this morning. I landed on this gravel bar from left to right. Unknown to me at the time there was a bull moose laying in the little willow patch. I took off from this bar and landed another a little upstream. I turned around and landed the first bar again in the opposite direction. There about 300 yards in front of me stood the moose. He was completely unconcerned about the idling Cub and was taking a long drink.

If you look close this after-picture shows him about in the center crossing the far bank.

I taxied closer and took this image as he crossed a little channel.

I never did see a moose on this Alaska trip. And this gravel bar area is just 2 miles from our airport. Deer and elk are common sights along the river but this is the first moose I've shared the gravel with.

They typically don't run from noise from engines until you turn the engine off. Leave it idling and thy pay little attention to you.

If there's one moose, there's gotta be more. You'll have a new career at the ranch with herd management of all the different wildlife. Very cool!

And you did not call?????

George we were a long way south of you. We fished around the north end of Prince Of Wales for guys like.

And me with a nice silver.

My son with a nice eater halibut.

Wendy, the moose was close to the ranch.

not sure why the images came out like they did but can't seem to fix it on the iPad.

Nice pics Dan. Almost 40 years ago I worked on POW island. The fishing was great then too. Biggest Halibut I ever caught (286 lbs) was near the south end of the island. But, I sure don't remember seeing too many sunny days like the ones in your pics. Thanks for the reminders that there is more than rain in SE Alaska.

Next time Dan.

Creek is full of fish today, lots of opportunity if you want to come up. I need to go catch halibut, so if anyone is flying by and wants to fish...

Hi Mike, it was an exceptional week weather wise. Hardly a cloud to be seen the entire time we were out there and not a hint of fog either. I fished around Bean Island on the southern end of POW a few years ago. Good fishing there too but none in the over 100 pound range for me. We had good wx on that trip too but this time was exceptional.

Here's another moose picture. This is what I saw when I landed the second time and first saw the moose. I landed within 100 yards or so of him off my left wing on the first landing.

I am heading up on the 16th. My wife has talked me into a cruise for our 30th. I have been quite a few times on my own, her first. Never been on a cruise ship. Not sure I am thrilled about being on a boat with 2000 other people! I will make the best of it!

Have been to POW fishing four times. Never saw a moose in SE Alaska- lots of bears and deer though. Saw moose while fishing up by Talkeetna but no deer!
