Landing gear leg

Do you know why the 3/32" wire about an inch long is welded to the the left rear tube about 3" above the axle? This is on a 1972 PA18-150 and appears
to be factory, since the plane had the original covering. No wire on the right gear leg.

My bet is that neither leg is factory or original....

Don't know about the wire, unless it is a tube for wire to pass through, cable brake type....

Ron,
I know the wire you are talking about. I've seen it on a couple of gearlegs also. Not sure if it's factory or not, but the new gear legs don't have it. I think it may have been a chafing device to keep a brake line or something from chafing through the gear tube. Haven't seen one in years.
