Who remembers the Super Cub Newsletter that was published by Jim Richmond for many years? It was a treasure trove of great stories, funny anecdotes, and expert-level technical advice about flying, owning, and restoring Super Cubs.
Below are some excerpts from the September 1984 issue, published 30 years ago this month. Jim talks about the frustrations of letting go of aircraft he had rebuilt as labors of love, the economics of $50/hour Super Cub rentals, there's great letters and photos from subscribers, and you can buy a 900 hour no damage history Super Cub (40 SMOH) for under $30K!
Starting in November, the Jim Richmond Backcountry Aviation Foundation will begin to republish these great newsletters monthly to its members. There's a treasure trove of really great information for backcountry flyers. There are wonderful memories, great locations to visit, discussions of relevant flying techniques, and deep-level old-school tribal knowledge of everything Super Cub. Many of the old timers who had this knowledge are gone now, there is a lot of information in these issues that current-day pilots simply going to learn anywhere else.
