Jerry Gaston, this should whet your appetite.

Torch

GONE WEST
Fairbanks, Alaska
Today I flew the Cub out for some fishing. I went to two different lakes. The first lake has lake trout and rainbow trout in it. I caught one 14 inch rainbow on a spinner. Then I caught this beautiful lake trout on the same lure.

Just a couple of casts later I caught this lake trout which was almost double the size of the first fish. It almost spooled me because I was using a small ultra light rod and reel for rainbows.

Then I flew 10 miles north to another lake that has rainbow trout in it. I caught 38 rainbows between 18 and 20 inches. I used a number 12 brown nymph that I tie out of beaver fur. It was almost a fish a cast. I caught them all in front of this beaver lodge that you can see behind my left wing. When I left the trout were still rising all around the lodge. Very good day. Jerry when you get here we will be fishing here.

It is 75 here in Fairbanks and the weather is marvelous. ALL THE FISH I caught today were caught on barbless hooks and they were released unharmed. They did have to suffer the indignity of looking at me when I took the hook out of their lips.

fish stories

Torch , Nice fish !! I can't speak for everyone on this site but I like to hear about the escapades of the folks like you who live where a Cub can be put to really good use . Keep the stories coming ,especially with pictures .. Thanks ... RC

Hopefully Jerry and I will be posting some good ones here in about two weeks. He is bringing his floatplane up to fish. Now that is an adventure.

I may have to leave several days earlier just to get in on the good fishing.
Got my bellie boat, fly rod and that ultra lite rod you told me to buy and a kitchen pass for a week. This could be good!!!

Jerry - you are one lucky dog!! Have a great time and catch some for me. See you at the Northwest Fly In at the end of the month.

Fishing

Jerry and Torch, be sure to send us alot of pictures to look at. Torch because you get to do this all the time its just another day of reeling in fish, But to the lower 48 folks its great to see and hear about your fishing and hunting adventures. Gives us something to dream about while working. I have talked with alot of old timers up there around Keni that won't fish for Kings, they go after reds and silvers. I asked them why and they told me it was to much work to reel the kings in. We should be so lucky.

Bill

Gunny and everyone else. Come on up. There is plenty of room to fish. I think I will head out again in the morning. Those fish need catching again.

Bill

Bill I still like fighting those kings. When you set the hook it feels like you just hooked the back bumper of a car on the freeway.

Some of my fondest memories was to catch a Red on the russian river and while yelling 'fish on' and wading past all the tourists get past them all, gently land the fish and gently release it and say thank and go do it again! (nearly many fist fights as they all were Pi??ed that I wouldn't keep a fish all day!!

Gotta admit catching a 50 lb king on 20 lb test in a river is a hoot (and can take awhile)

Bill I, don't worry buddy, you keep your dream alive and you will be there with Torch!!

Torch: We us barbless hooks here in Montana also but I haven't figured out how to get the powder burns off them before I throw them back in.
Gunny: I'm taking that bottle of Laguviln along for good luck. Hope Canada Customs doesn't take it away.
I do need help figuring out how to go thru customs at Northway and get fuel. Does anyone have phone numbers and a map. Remember I'm on straight floats :D

Northway

Jerry,

It has been a while but I am almost certain you can get customs at Northway on straight floats. I remember meeting a Citabria pilot at Northway who kept his floatplane on floats very close (apparently) to the airport. You might need to call US Customs and ask or look in the AFD.

On the other thread, I saw you are thinking of stopping at Atlin. Though chances are about 50/50 that Juneau will be VFR, that could be plan B - and definitely with Customs - to get into Alaska sooner. Then Yakatat, Cordova, Valdez, with interesting, and sometimes fresh and smooth water below you most of the way.

My 2 cents.....

Thanks Bob for the info. I have flown that route several times but only twice on straight floats. Yakatat won't sell fuel at the dock you have to go into the airport using a cab and fuel cans to get fueled up which is a pain. Seems the lawyers got ahold of the fuel distributer and told him of all the problems associated with sea plane fueling. So it is a long flight from Juneau to Cordova.

I'm leaving my cub in Alaska all summer and going to fly to and from commerical. Hope to visit Crash sometime in July and go to Dillingham in August. I'm looking for a place to store my cub this coming winter so I don't have to fly it home. I want to put it in side because I won't be there to sweep the snow off.

Jerry

Jerry,

I have a hangar on the Kenai Peninsula you could use. There is plenty of room -for several Cubs- now and through the winter. It is my own personal hangar, but there are pictures of it on the website at the address below.

But that is if you could get on wheels first when the float season ends to fly it there. There are lakes nearby with a strip adjacent and plenty of help to get you changed over to wheels if you like.

Bob that sounds like a real deal on the hanger. when I get down in that area i may contact you to see what if any arrangements need to be made. Thanks.
When are you going to be in Alaska?

Jerry,

As you know I don't have a cub now? I would fly to Alaska every other month this winter and exercise your cub on Skiis? ( I do miss ski flying a lot!) Have a great trip North!

Tim

Tim although I'm not a certified cfi I'm sure I would have to check you out again to make sure you still know how to fly. So...pick the date and I'll go with you.

Bob Lets try to hook up some time this summer. Give me your phone number in AK and I'll try to get in touch with you.
