Javron Cub Complete

Well I built another Javron Cub. I started it in November 2019 and finished it in July 2020.

First flight was off my 350 foot airstrip.

So here are the list of equipment that make up GM Cub: 1080 empty weight
Javron narrow body kit which includes Javron round tip wings, stock flaps, stock ailerons.
3' extended gear
35" Alaskan Bushwheels
Borer prop pitched to 41
0-320 engine with 10-1 pistons and dual slick impulse mags
No starter
Earth X battery ETX-680
B&C 8 amp alternator
Trig com and Trig Transponder with ADSB out
Full electrical panel with breakers and switches (old school)
Super Flight primer and paint
Baby Bushwheel
Extended upper and lower baggage
Fine Line Seat cushions
Acme Gen 4 Shocks
Front and rear controls
.032 metal floor boards (powder coated)
.020 metal interior panels (powder coated)
Carbon concepts underseat storage and control fairings

I have around 30 hours in it now and it is a real hot rod, light on the controls and quick on the throttle. Puts a smile on my face and it is what I am flying since I am doing a full engine
overhaul on Bushwacker 2.0 right now.

Nobody commenting on the TEST FLIGHT off his 350' strip?! Having a 400' mountain strip myself, I now feel like a slacker, as I've always wimped out and and taken a new bird down into the valley to test fly. No starter, that is hard core! I like that simple paint scheme, and the time line on building it.

White and Red cub is Doug Kellers, Stock PA-18, great airplane.

The flying from my home strip was a calculated risk I guess. I know the strip and for a cub it is an easy take off. I wanted to assemble at home where I have all my tools, just makes life easier. I figured the other two places I might use to do it were both just as unforgiving once I broke ground so what the heck. I did trust my work and I did a short runup and taxi test and it felt ready, honestly as soon as I put the power to it I knew it was all good.

The time frame works because I have done so many now and I have lots of great tools, it's a good kit to work with also.

I will take some more pictures and post.

PSTOL flaps are nice and I would probably have them if they were not so far out on the orders. I wanted to see how much difference they made and so I flew Doug's cub back to back with my cub a month back, it is a few mph light. Loaded it may make a bigger difference. Still might order them just having a ball with it the way it is.

A guide I used to know flew a stock 18, and flew it very well. Every time he’d see a Cub with any wing mods he’d shake his head and mutter something about “Batman wings”...

I have built 3 experimental cubs now.

1st one was yellow Got Rocks (not a kit), O-360 Lycoming with 10-1 pistons (Bart engine), 90"pitched 33 propeller, no covering on the tail but a custom baggage area where turtle deck use to be, 3" extended gear on 35" ABW, 13 rib stock wing with stock flaps and ailerons, stock angle of incidence, stock tail feathers, baby bushwheels, no starter or electrical system for that matter, micro VG's, built in thrustline engine mount lowered the engine for stock visibility, 36 gallons of fuel, oregon aero front seat, composite floor boards not much for interior panels, no "D" windows, titanium firewall no blanket and a 4" long custom boot cowl. Weighed 1053. It really got off the ground quick but was pretty nose heavy. Since then it has gone through a complete transformation by the new owner. Lots and lots of mods.

2nd one was silver cub (Javron wide body with Univar wing parts) GM Cub, O-360 Lycoming with 10-1 pistons that I overhauled, 1P23584/44 propeller, oratex covering, raised the angle of incidence 1/2", extended the wings and squared them off, custom double slotted flaps 108", custom ailerons 89" dakota wing tips 36 gallons of fuel, full electrical but similar panel to the new cub, oregon aero interior seats (front and back), metal interior panels full interior, composite floor boards, full boot cowl, stainless steel firewall with blanket. Weighed 1194, it flew a lot slower (at least 6 mph) but was not as much fun to fly(more truck like), it performed very good though and was a much better adventure airplane then Got Rocks. It also had a starter because after Got Rocks I decided I would not do the no starter thing again....

3rd one yellow/black cub (Javron narrow body) see specs above. I decided to do the no starter thing again and I think it is easier with an O-320 Lycoming. I also wanted a cub with less weight on the nose this time. I guess maybe I have come full circle. I would like to fly slower for sure but not sure I want to give up the sportiness of a stock wing. Double slotted flaps would get me 2-3 mph.

I have a full machine shop, cnc lathes, cnc mills, manual mill and lathe, vertical and horizontal bandsaw, shear and brake, bead blast cabinet, pretty much every air tool, pretty much every hand tool. If I don't have it I buy it when I need it. Hardware for assembly. I order stuff ahead of when I will need it so I am not waiting on things.

PSTOL flaps I did not order ahead of time even though i knew their lead time was getting bigger. I was and I am still not sure I will keep the cub. I only need one airplane and Bushwacker will probably be the one.

Yes, they were before Airframe bought the rights from Doug Keller. Doug was kind enough to share strut material and prints

Greg, I really like your videos and the way you narrated them. Very informative! Question for you, why is Bushwacker all black and your Cub wings black? Just like the color? Melt frost? Some other reason? Just curious on that.
