Iron Dog 2014 Alaska

39-J3

FRIEND
Maine
Is anyone from Supercub.org flying chase planes for the Iron dog snowmobile race in Alaska? I have a few friends racing with Team Maine Racing and so far all is going well but still a long way to go. If anyone has pictures I would love to see them.

Larry.

Larry,

Is Howard Seevy one of your buddies? I think they scratched in Big Lake, I do not know what happened. Do you?

I used to ride with Howard years ago up on the Gaspe.

Kurt

I was asked to fly. Too busy.

The leaders are about 900 miles into it. 24 minutes separates the top 3 teams. They got across the barren ground better than anyone expected.

Love my Etecs!

I was going to fly with team Maine but my wife broke her leg and they had to get backup pilot. He has a 185 so is faster and can haul more gear. no pics yet. Pilots should be in nome tonight. Hopefully they will call with update. The Team Maine Racing site is good for following the boys.

A lot of the sleds aren't in too good of shape in Nome. Lack of snow led to a lot of ski-skeg damage and overheating of the engines. Good race so far, gonna be fast back to Fairbanks, river is in good shape.

The Iron dog air force is parked right out side my window here in Nome. Ill snap a few pics when it gets light out.

The race coverage is pretty spotty for folks who are not on the ground there. You guys in Nome....can you tell us things like: 1. what is broken on the top teams sleds 2. who is looking healthy 3.what is the trail like...and ice...etc. THANK YOU. ...former chaser-pilot who is jones-ing for the excitement.

Dixon/Vasser scratched last night. Rear suspension failures. One sled's still 50 miles short of Nome but they both got into town riding double. My name's on their sleds (small print :))
so they're the only ones I pay close attention to. The Vipers have promise but their race is over for this year. Good try.

Dave ill see what i can find out for you. Worst part of the trail so far has been between White Mountain and Nome. I've been mostly following Mike Morgan team #10 first to Nome. His dad fly's for us out here.

SB... Dougy. ...for all the sponsorship..he oughtta train harder :). They aren't even close to the top teams... ...well..he WAS that ONE year that all the top Dogs crashed, burned, and scratched. :) ...easy for me to say.....I have no desire to compete in this race. Doug comes off the couch and goes for it.

I heard from my boys' pilots that they (team 17) need new skis....that's it. I guess it's pretty hard to steer without any skegs......that let the others catch and pass them. One or both of the boys lost a skeg and wore out their skis.

I heard Mike and Chris (team 10) will need about 15 minutes of wrenching...not sure what kindof work. Those guys are both cool! and so is Stan!

I heard Tyler and Tyson (team 8) came back into Shaktoolik riding double......Tyson was soaked head to toe...

That's all I heard so far.

...Todd and Nick (team 16) sure caught back up nicely after first day breakage disappointment.

Cory Davis and Ryan Simons (team 41) have been close to the leaders all along and it is pretty kick ass to see them in second.

The George's (team 6) are looking better than I've ever seen them.

I expected Barber and Sottosanti (team 2) to get to Nome quicker...those guys were smoking along pretty good earlier.

Boney and Laraux (team 19) are 7 hours slower to Nome than the leaders...another Yamaha disapointment :).....even when you got two young bucks holding on and pinned!

Hell....it ain't fair....those two-strokes make "twice as much" power. :)

I can't speak for Chris, but I will second the endorsement for Mike and Stan! Stan is a great Cub and 180 pilot and one of the most experienced CASA captains around...I always loved flying with him

My E-Tec 600 blew up the same way Team 11's did, oil sump / bearing problems.

Ouch, did you take a loss on that or was it replaced? I was looking at 2 year old ski MX Z with the same engine, should I continue to offer them cash or should I reconsider something else?
SnowMobiles in Europe (Southern Europe) are a rare find so it seem like an interesting opportunity.... but I know nothing other than riding some else ride...

Craigslist ads shall double now, bunch of 600cc clapped/wallered out sleds with good prices.

We just put a 600 Etec in the trailer with 177 miles on this tank of gas and it isn't out yet. Stock fuel tank. Spinning a 136 x 1 3/4 track with stock gears. Not too bad!

I was helping team Maine, it was a very rough to this year with crazy freak problems. Everything from drum ice giving way and hitting an ice bank at high speed, to an ice scratcher coming off, getting stuck in track, then punching thru cooler and gas tank....those are the highlights other than the split track and blown motor problems... The weather wasn't too bad.... Bad vis in puntilla day 1, a little windy in unalakleet headed to Fairbanks, was all that we had to worry about. Fun times!

Stewart, your not riding it hard enough if your getting that kind of mileage. ☺ 76 Heavy I followed them back on Saturday band had 36 mph ground speed below Bible camp for a little bit,'was a slow trip to Fairbanks.

That was a buddy's sled. I was on the VK. He's a hard riding race veteran but the weekend was a mix of high speed boy riding and bashing through the willows looking for a moose to shoot. The conditions allow some pretty good mileage. We used to think a hundred miles on a tank was good. My Etecs can bust deep snow for a hundred and still have range left. These new sleds are amazing, and not just the SkiDoos.

Congrats to the Polaris faithful on the win. More guys finished than any of us expected. Tough year.

Now to find that moose..... On a 40* Iditarod/river party weekend. Man, I love springtime.

I have a 600 ACE skandic and can just about get 200 miles to a tank of gas. My old Skandic Super Wide Track only gets about 75 miles to a tank. Mileage sure gotten better but we are paying for it now days. The price of sleds must have doubled since 15 years ago I'll bet. I have a Polaris Rush 800 and I get 120 miles to a tank maybe 130.
