Husky vs. Scout vs. Cub

It sounds like you have a very nice, powerful Cub. If you are on the Kenai Peninsula, it would be great fun to go out and chase each other around, and in a low key way, evaluate how our planes actually compare in takeoff, landing, climb and cruise. We will have a Husky on Bushwheels and the Rosti skis, so depending on what gear you are on, we can come play.

George

George,
I noticed yesterday that while my airspeed indicator was stuck on 105 MPH, no matter which direction I flew I had a tail wind! I was scouting for Ducks not documenting air speed, but I noticed what you stated about the air speed indicator being slower than the plane.

I will try to get a four direction GPS documentation flight completed in the next week or so.

Pretty common Husky problem is moisture in the Pitot/Static Tube, Mast, and Lines in the wings.

I think someone said the new bird has a change in the design to fix this.

Mike, George?

DAVE

Dave,

Not that I'm aware of, but George is more up to speed on the newest at the factory.

The last new Husky I flew had a heated pitot, and that virtually eliminated the moisture in the system, so the design there obviously changed.

Chuck,

I've never had that happen, but frankly, I just put a couple vented caps on the Husky. Atlee's caps work fine. No mo problemo...

I haven't heard of a factory change. We now have less problems with water in the new wing Husky, but I attributed that to using the pitot cover when outside in the rain. No problems with the Husky on floats, without a pitot cover.

I picked up the Husky after Steve Pierce completed the installation of the AOSS.

Many have asked for the cost figures: Here goes:
AOSS $3000
Husky STC Kit for AOSS, $1500
CC Cabane V, 3" Extended Gear Legs and bolt kit, $1800
Atlee Dodge Safety Cables, $250
Pierce Aero, Labor and Misc Materials, $5420
Misc Freight, $125
Total, $12,095

Mike we had parked our Husky at a farm strip for several days, on the walk around there was no sign of the vent tubes having been plugged, however we did have the engine quit and I was lucky to managed to get it over an airport before I lost all power.

It was mud daubers that had plugged both tubes, we found the mud and dauber worms in both tubes when we disconnected the lines at the tanks.

We had plastic bags to catch the stuff that came out of the tubes.

Our Husky now has plugs on the fuel vent tubes as well as the pitot tube.

Vented caps will be next.

Chuck,

I've never figured out why Aviat didn't use vented caps in the first place, but. There are some NAPA auto parts caps that work fine as well, but I've had good luck with Super Cub caps, though I wouldn't bring that up on Supercub.org.... 8)

Fuel Vent plugs

Chuck E

the fuel vent problem is known. We have developed a new low restriction plug that slided on the fuel vent. It makes it impossible for bugs to enter. And it definetly stops the peeing when arked on a slope.

I developed this valve/ plug for our RF8001 retract skis. Since we fly a lot in the alps, we have to park with the wing dropped all the times on the glaciers. Treehuggers do not like the blue snow, plus your range is kinda down if all the fuel is in the glacier instead of in the tanks.

You then may fly with our plug on the vent.

In case of using vents that seal completly, you have two problems: 1st you may forget the plug.
2 nd you do not allow fuel expansion.

Let me know your address and I ll send you a free set.

I really enjoy flying such a simple machine again and I am now right back where I started which was my first job flying a Cub crop dusting oh so many years ago.

Chuck E.,
I tried to PM you but your inbox is full...

Are you familiar with the aero mod biplane cub mod that was created in Arkansas specifically for agriculture work? Would you be willing to explain to me how the Cubs were used, I was told that the Cubs were used to cover the corners of fields or smaller fields that the larger aircraft could not safely spray. I have no idea if this is accurate information.

Thanks,

Mike
