How many Husky Drivers?

I have heard you mention that accident before but I don't think I have ever seen that pic. That is pretty wicked looking. Amazing anybody could survive that.
 
I have a older Husky and a 160 cub I like them both , for slow flight i like the cub and for landing rough i like the cub ,for power to climb and for speed I like the Husky, and cc I like the Husky .My Husky is 100 lbs lighter then the cub and has the 180 and constant speed prop.

How heavy is your cub!? I bet you’d really like that cub if it was lighter.
 
Mine is a government cub bult by Baker air. They did a great job but I think it broke 1300 when I put on the 35” bush wheels . Not sure how to get 300 lbs out of it besides a strip down.
 
If you have a Husky with anything but 8.50 tires and it weighs 1200lbs, that is super light for a Husky. Cub with 35's is not really that heavy at 1300 lbs with some mods, equipment on it.
I have a Husky with belly pod and 35's, Cub extended gear/AOSS, tried to make it light as possible, still slightly over 1300 lbs.

John, what are the pro’s and con’s of the different gears? I’m debating just getting heavy duty and extended husky gear or going with the cub gear. It’s hard to find good information on husky’s. I have a pair of LW2500 skis so stock gear isn’t going to work, also I’m worried about the axles breaking on my stock gear. Thanks John.

My cub was 1125 on 35’s. With the usual mods. Big baggage big baggage door float fittings x brace seatbelts full electrics and lights

I would think the streamline before the axles.
 
I Have 29” on the husky it is a 1990 and weights 1234 lbs almost a 100 lbs less the the cub and a great preforming plane the Cub does have the 160 HP in it , just does not have the climb rate but it is not bad. I have never flown the lighter smaller HP Cubs.
 
I hear the cub gear will slow down the Husky 8 MPH but it is a sturdy gear with less bounce and better for side load on skis
 
The Husky gear's frailty is the streamline cabanes. They'll bend in rebound if you hit something bumpy, as in on skis. We added a cross tube between the cabanes and the main gear tubes to stiffen them.

Axles are strong as Cub axles. The gear on the Husky has a fair amount of rebound to it.....a bunch of 1380HD bungees at work. Thomas Deitrich in Germany has some different bumpers to go in the stock gear he calls "no bounce gear". Helps with the rebound some.

I've not flown a Husky on Cub gear, but I too have been told that it significantly slows the plane. I'd say if you really are doing the BIG rocks thing, that may be your best bet..... That said, the speed of the Husky is really one of it's endearing features.

Only thing I ever had bend on a Husky undercarriage was one cabane before we put in the brace. We ran mostly 29 inch Bushwheels, and some 31s on them.

Yes love the speed on the Husky ! I have a friend that did put Cub gear on a husky. Seems to take away from what I like about them . Unless you have it In The rough a lot . Both great plans I do have both and seem to fly the Husky the most. But if I am just flying in the back country off airport I love the cub.
 
The extended Cub gear on the Husky does slow it down, say maybe 10mph+ with 31's. We put fairings on the cub gear and got back 5mph, and teardrop shape fairings on the AOSS shocks and gained another 3mph. But still slower than stock Husky gear, but stock gear is not that great as many have stated. One can plop the Husky down with the cub/AOSS gear and just no bounce.
I have a 2018 Husky with the factory extended gear and the shocks. Factory gear is extended 4" taller and 2" forward, so is better than standard gear, but I like the cub gear and AOSS far better for the rough stuff.
The 2018 is very fast, 115-120mph, so if going fast is your goal, the stock Husky is great. Still get into short and rough stuff, braking is better with the 2" forward gear too, not nose heavy as much, but also not a 200HP model, they are nose heavy.
Not sure if the factory extended gear can go on an older Husky? Is set up for the shock system.
And I do have the SGS bumpers that Thomas makes, they help on the rebound, softens it.

Correct. But be aware the Seaplanes gear is just 3" extended, nothing forward. And the tubes are bigger, so slows one down more.

Really don’t think I’m going to be going into real ruff stuff any more. I didn’t renew my big game guides LIC a few years ago so flying a bit easier. As my hunting partner always said I’m just not that made at the moose to land in there,lol.
I guess I’ll stay with the Husky gear for a while until I see where the Husky leads me. I’ll brace it like Mike said and cover it for speed. I have a set of 26” Goodyear’s off the 185 that are like new , they should work for what I plan on doing.
Thank you for the input, hard to find infro on the Husky vs. Cubs. Calling Husky will get you sell yours and buy a new one, lol.

The factory extended gear can be retrofitted on s/n 3141 and later (2012 to current). You need to have the factory dampened gear to retrofit the extended gear.

I fly with several friends who own Huskys. I'm the only one in the group without cub gear. 99% of the time, I'm glad I have the standard gear. But I have that 1% envy when those guys can drop it in and squat and I'm bouncing around on certain landing conditions. One of the planes is on 35s and another is on 29s and the rest are on 31s including mine. Surprisingly, the 35s on cub gear is not particularly slow in cruise but is an underperformer in the climb. I would say cruise at 24 squared in the 35/cub gear is equivalent to mine at 2100/24". Maybe somewhere around 105 mph. My "regular" gear is actually the Seaplanes North Heavy Duty Gear, standard length, because the 3" gear isn't approved for my Airglas GLH3000 skis. I consider switching over to the Cub gear every year for the benefits of the AOSS as well as giving me more prop clearance while on skis which I really need. But all of the welding and expense keeps me running my current setup year after year. Maybe one of these days.....
 
I also have a buddy running cub gear I think if I did not have a cub I would think about potting it on the husky. But here’s in Montana 95% of the time I don’t need it. I am on 29” and I feel it is a good all around set up for the Husky . If I were in Ak I think I might change it over. The husky gear seems to Bounce but it does cut though the air nice on them longer flights. Thanks for your thoughts.
 
I find it interesting how many different plane designs, Huskys and RANS S-7's to name just two, eventually come around to the fact that what they REALLY need is some derivation of cub style gear! I'll never forget the first time the guy who made my cub style gear (John Roberts) showed it to me. Not mounted on a plane, and it just instantly clicked: how the cabane works, how the forces are distributed, etc. I had never realized before what a great design it is. I interrupted John to ask "how much, how soon?"
 
Yes Piper had a great design back so long ago . If you think about how car and truck and motorcycle suspension was 70 years ago nothing like today .
 
Honestly I do not see the need for the “Cub” gear on the Husky for my purposes. I have the SGS rubber dampening on my gear which really helps. I just don't go into the super rough places with my airplane, if I did then I would consider the “Cub” gear but I would then have a reduced cruise speed and miles per gallon which means I need to carry more fuel for the mission, its all a trade/compromise. The extended HD gear from Aviat or the one Seaplanes/Atlee offers would be a good improvement while still retaining the speed. It’s all a trade off, match the mod with the mission.

Where does your buddy live? I have a Husky and love it. Love the Super Cub too! Different airplanes even though they seem to be the same.
