It's time to take a break from house restoration: I'm planning a trip from Elkhart, IN to the Four Corners region. I'll be leaving Thursday, May 5 and returning Wednesday, May 11. The approximate route takes me over (or near) Peoria, IL, Kirksville, MO, Kansas City, Topeka, and Salina (Kansas), Las Vegas, NM, and Santa Fe. I'm looking for suggested places to visit or avoid along the way. I'd like to do some flying and photography in Monument Valley, and welcome any tips for maintaining good relations with residents of the reservations in the area.

I've got room for a passenger for any or all of the trip, and welcome any other unencumbered pilots who want to join in with their planes.

Go up around Moab, Utah and cruise the Canyonlands. Camping at Mexican Mountain is nothing short of spectacular. I was in there last week and the colors were incredible...the trees were all greened up and the river flowing great. The surrounding red cliffs really shine in the late afternoon. It is 1300' long with good approaches both directions. If you like your spots a little tighter, try Dirty Devil. 1000' long and a one-way approach. Lots of petrified wood in there and, again, the afternoon colors are unbelievable.

Coordinates are on www.utahbackcountrypilots.org The folks in Utah really do a good job on their backcountry strips. We need more like that here in Montana
