Gross weight increase

Anyone have any pics pic at various stages of installing the 2000lbs gross weight kit in a PA 18 150?

Any help with the procees from anyone who has installed it would be helpful.

I studied the pictures to see how the cap rib can be installed to a fully covered wing. I heard it can be done just not sure the best way to tackle this. If you have any ideas or know of any who has done this , if you don't mind, let me know. My plane is covered and flying at the moment and doesn't need to be rebuild anytime soon.

You could slit the fabric to install and then patch. The fun part would be the gussets on the ribs that the spar cap reinforcement runs through. Just depends on how big a patch you wanna make.

Thanks Steve. I appreciate your suggestions and idea. I have heard that this has been done done in the field by a number of supercub owners. Hopefully others will weight in to add to your suggestion if they have had a close experience with installing this in a already covered wing. I would like to have it completred with the least amount of fabric but realizing that the window will likely have to be large enough to work with.


I'd like to know how they get the cap under the ribs unless it is slide in from the end of the spar ....that would invlove alot more fabric work than I expected.

I wasn't sure in the fuselage pics which one indicated the additional tube for the mod?

its relatively easy...(well.. not, but it is)

you cut a "H" slit in top of wing above spar, you start next to one rib farther out(in??) than that cap strip will cover so you have room to slide it under ribs...

gently roll fabric forward and back and tape down while you do your work(use a roll under it like 2"diameter like fabric comes on to avoid the fabric folding over to tight and creasing)

do your work then close it up with whatever method you are covered with....might just be a tape or two... or baseball stitch depending on method
 
And...if you have EDO 2000 floats and already have the Wipaire gross weight mod on your Cub, Wipaire will sell you the paperwork to make it legal on your EDOS. I've been away from the site so maybe this has already been discussed.
 
Thank you guys. It looks like this coud be a go for me so the more informed I can get before starting this the better. I appreciate all your advice and welcome any new or more helpful ideas or suggestions. I am installing wip 2100as' and don't have the mod so I am getting some homework done beforehand.

How about for an 18A

What is being done to install the Whipline GW mod on an 18A?
I can’t help but think that someone has done it without converting to a standard fuselage.

The problem is with the small tube welded to the front cross member for the rear seat structure. Both of my 18As have the original "removable rear seat frame", and I use this feature all the time as I transport lots of cargo. We have full length floor boards below the seat which allows heavy cargo to be located closer to the CG. I really don't want to sacrifice this option by welding in a cross tube.

I tried to get info from Whipair but the person that I talked to couldn't seam to grasp what I was talking about. I guess he was not familiar with an 18A.

I have seen at least one cub that has a "bolt in aluminum brace" rather then the tube. I guess that it was installed to avoid the welding required as they installed the kit without a complete recover. I do not know any other details for it though.

Now that Whipair has the GW increase for Edo 2000 floats I have become very interested.

Any help or a contact phone # would be helpfull

The only 18A that I have seen with the removable seat frame, had the angle bolted in...not welded...for the GW Mod.....

What is the cost for the Edo paperwork from whip?

Per the Wipaire STC under the section showing the in 3/8" tube:
3. IN THE CASE OF PA-18A OR SPECIALLY MODIFIED AIRCRAFT IN WHICH THE SEAT TUBE IS REMOVABLE, IT IS ACCEPTABLE TO INSTALL A BRACE THAT STABILIZES THE LOWER REAR DOOR CLUSTER IN AN EQUIVALENT MANNER AS SHOWN HERE.

With the holidays starting, I expect my gross weight will increase with no paperwork at all. :p
 
Or you mean your empty weight :)

That is why I put the 180 on mine.... My wife says she has been noticing an increase in something on me but I suspect the bathroom scale is totally out of calibration. Who is she going to believe... me or her lying eyes.

Thanks so much for the info on the tubing changes. I’m struggling with how to create anything in an “equivalent manner” without welding in the cross tube. Sounds as if they are just saying that’s OK with them to make it like the standard design to be able to comply. In other words it just authorizes the change. Any ideas??
 
Just bolt the aluminum bracket they provide or maybe a couple of tabs where the brace is welded tothe seat tube and pinned to a fitting on the door frame.

I was thinking of that but if I want to remove the rear seat frame to haul "stuff" then I would think that the "gross weight increase" is invalid....

They want the door tubing cluster supported but the only direction that I can think of is that there is a concern about it deflecting to the side. It would be nice to just be able to install an internal stiffner through the cluster itself, but getting that appoved may take some doing.
 
Does anyone know they do to the landing gear in this mod? I am also very interrested in this mod for my PA18-150 (160) project. Have Edo 2000.
