Gotta love MMO

Hi,

I bought a 46 Cub back last Aug. It was delivered on a trailer from Buffalo. Long story but I did not get to fly it before I bought it.....bad move. I am VERY lucky to have a beautiful Grass strip 10 min from home with a very helpful A/I there trying to make ends meet. After the Cub arrived, Fresh from annual, he deemed it unairworthy. He was right. Sensenich red tagged the prop after I sent it to them....and a laundry list of issues. Over the last 2 months we have resolved all but the stumbling on acceleration big time and lack of power. With the help from Bob Turner from here we took apart the Stromberg carb and overhauled it. The problem was less but still there. Did several high speed (for a 65 cub) up and down the runways yesterday....very rough running till full throttle. Now during all the testing I insisted in running Marvel in the gas..My A/I had no objections. Neither he or I dared to actually go aloft till we cured the stumbling problem. It seemed a bit better on the last run last night but was gettin dark so we decided to give it a try this morning as I had to leave on a 5 day trip. He made a couple of runs down the grass strip then to my surprise went flying for about 30 min. When he landed he said in his most eloquent manner "if I didn't know what a piece of S... this was when you got it I swear it was a different plane as it flew just like a nice Cub. So for the first time since 1963 I went flying in a cub. When I came down he asked if it was worth all the effort.......no answer was needed as I was grinning from ear to ear. I do think the MMO did more to cure the carb problem that the teardown and rebuild did. Anyway its running quite nice.. airspeed indicator died but thats minor....
Thanks to all here on the forum that have helped and answered my many questions...

Tom,

I assume you are putting the MMO in the gas? If you are (and you can) putting MMO in the oil, you may want to change the oil after about 5 hours. MMO acts as a solvent that will loosen any crud that has built up on the inside of the engine.

Glad things are starting to look up!

John,

Yes it is being used only in the gas right now. I did plan to put some in the oil about 5 hours before we change it. We pulled the screen and it looked good but will try and put about 10-15 hours on it then do an oil change to Philips 20-50 for the winter.

Instant Airworthy...

Isn't it amazing how much nicer something that was a POS, can turn into an Airworthy Decent Machine, with just a little work and perseverance... Two good friends here in town just bought a C-150M that wa deemed a POS, spent two days cleaning, and fixing minor squawks, and now have a very nice little beater. Not a show airplane by any means, but a good solid, airworthy Airplane. I try to tell clients, they don't have to be New, or pretty, to be airworthy, just clean and sound. There next step in the evolution, is to remove the old ARC Radio and Xpnder, and replace with a Garmin 250 or 300 and GTX320 Xpndr. Should make it a nice little Airplane...
Never discount what your heart is telling your brain. It can be very amazing what just a few hours of simple work can do for these old airplanes...

Champdriver,

You are right......and to add the feeling of satifaction from working (under the watchfull eye of my A/I) on a POS and seeing it turn around to a safe flyable machine. There is much left I would like to do and will over time.

I wonder how biodiesel compares to MMO when added to the fuel. The BD has excellent lubricity qualities but tends to clean things also.

Hi Marty, since kerosine soaks into carbon deposits, so biodiesel oughta do something similar....

Love That MMO

We've been running Marvel in our fuel for quite some time with good results. 4 oz to 10gallons of fuel or thereabouts.
I went to the drugstore and bought presription cough syrup bottles from a pharmacist friend of mine. About 20cents apiece.
I load them up with Marvel, and have them ready to dump in the gas tank. Works great.
We just added alittle MMO to the oil, as we are preparing to changeover to winter oil. I've been out flying the last few times, and am amazed at how nice that little 65hp Continental sounds. PRRRRRRRR!!

Haven't heard too many people that haven't had good success with the stuff.
